I've spent a decent amount of time lately researching great soundtracks for gaming. I want to come up with a list of the 20 (more or less) Best "MUST HAVE" CD Soundtracks for Gaming? They can be movie or TV. These should be the soundtracks that should be in every D&D players library.
Here is list of the soundtracks I have seen mentioned repeatedly as being great overall music to play during a game:

Lord of the Rings
Gladiator
Lost (TV show)
Pirates of the Caribbean
The Last Samurai
Last of the Mohicans
Alexander
Kingdom of Heaven
King Arthur
The 13th Warrior

Black Hawk Down

Thoughts???
I have purchased / aquired / assembled most of the CDs from this list (along with some addition ones as well). I am now in the process of pulling the best pieces from each soundtrack into iTunes so I can then burn my "Ultimate Pathfinder / D&D game soundtrack CD set". Currently, it looks like it will be a 4 or 5 volume set! I can post the actual track list here when I'm all done ...
There are a few soundtrack CDs I'm having trouble tracking down though. Does anyone have any of these?:

I can't believe the Halo OST is not on your list. Great choral stuff.
For Excalibur, you could just go with Carl Orff's Carmina Burana instead. That's the only track that matters.

Mulan's "Be a MAN!" song amuses me no end, as Mulan proceeds to out-man all the manly men.
Comedy gold. Soundtrack would perhaps not work for every adventure, but for the more light-hearted I can totally see it.

| For politics (or anywhere cultured) I recommend the Blood Opera Suite, available for a free listen at John Wick's Houses of the Blooded website. It one of the most common albums I listen to while writing. |

A band by the name of Dead Can Dance provides for some great atmospherics. Some samples!

Song of the Nile
Rakim
Cantara(live) (no idea what she's singing about, but it always makes me think of witches calling something up, or Medea)
If you're not familiar with them, the female vocalist is Lisa Gerard who went on to do the 'Gladiator' soundtrack and several others. |

For something with a slightly eerier vibe, you can check out Donnie Darko or Pandorum.
And depending on the setting, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is excellent.
If you can find some rarer music, try Krull or Somethign Wicked This Way Comes.
Anything by David Arkenstone can also work.[/u] |

Well, my gaming soundtrack adventure is more or less concluded. I purchased (for the most part) or otherwise acquired (library etc) some great soundtrack CDs. I then went through each one and picked out the individual songs that I felt worked well as music to play during a game.
These songs then went into iTunes. I manually organized the songs so music from the same soundtrack did not play after each other and then burned them all to CD.
We now have a 12 volume set! 12 CDs filled with more than 200 great gaming tracks - over 14 hours ... not to mention really fun to listen to LOUD in the car
Here are the main soundtracks that make up the 12 disc set. By main, I mean there was a LOT of great stuff on these and I ended up choosing a significant number of tracks from each one. There are assorted single songs from a number of other soundtracks as well to round the collection out, but these CDs served as my primary sources:

A LONG and involved project, but it was worth it!
Of course, I'll still continue to pick up sountracks, so I can't rule out a Vol. 13 and 14 at some point ...

| I found an instrumental copy of the theme from Knightmare a couple of years ago, as well as the tune Remembrance from the original Halo game. Both of these have gained good mileage over the years, along with theme tunes from the Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Carribean. Gustav Holst's The Planets are pretty good (especially Mars, the God of War), as is Richard Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries. |
