I too use a projector and either paper or figure mini's from a variety of sources. Including some from my old 1st Ed days!

We don't use projectors or expensive miniatures.
In small battles both maps and the positions of the participants are drawn by pencil. We use minis only in large battles. If I perchance have a map that fits the area's description, fine, but most of the time I draw my own maps.
I bought a few minis very cheap on ebay, but that's about it. Since its quite expensive and I'm still a student, I don't use a projector. Instead I use impovised props, as you can see in the following pics.
Large "end battle" that finalized a more than 12 month long story arc: Preventing a demon lord (Turaglas, see dragon mag 312) from coming back and devouring the world)

I have a friend who works for an Ad agency who can print large maps in color discreetly...
So yes, I use maps and mini's... |

I use my two and a half sets of Tact-tiles and a Chessex battle, along with an array of different colored markers. I do love my countour lines marked with evelvations and terrain types.
For minis I beg from players, or use Legos in conjunciton with my markers. |

I'm not a big fan of maps and minis, at least for the quick and easy fights and for the smaller groups (4 or 5 players) that I prefer. Why make a production out of a cakewalk? Minis can be a huge distraction and take up time I'd rather spend on the characters.
That said, I like them for the big boss fights. At a certain point, there's too many moving parts.
For minis, though, I count on players to bring something. I'd rather invest in terrain and props.

| One reason I started to use miniatures more is that I actually was having trouble remembering counters. They lie flat, so I would glance quickly at the board and sometimes miss a mook. The day I missed the BBEG's assistant's action, I realized I had to use more minis. That said, there's no right or wrong way to do it. It's just individual preference. |

Same here. I just don't do a very good job without them.
I think 4E will be more difficult to do without them, as there is a slightly higher degree of tactical manuevers to keep track of.
Of course, I find 3.5 challenging without using them anyway. |

| I would agree that personal perference is the way to go, I've known good GMs who didn't use any props and we had great fun, I've also had good GMs who were terrible at running combats and required nudging to use them. I actually fall in to that category, I didn't start using anything more than a peice of graph paper and pencils until my 3rd - 3rd edition campaign were I develpoed a love of large encounters with lots of minions and the use of more props has grown from there. Now I do love big battles with lots of foes and varied terrain. |

Eh, I've never really used minis.
Graph paper (or a yellow legal pad), some pencils, books and dice are really all I need. Sometimes pennies are used if marking location is *really* important - meh.
I have a few minis, in case I want a visual aide. But they almost never make it to the table. |

| For the little stuff we use markers and dry erase hex maps. For the larger stuff (boss fights and really large battles) we tend to go the mini route. Everyone in the group plays Warhammer or 40K, so we have a pretty big stack of minis and terrain to pull from. |

I am always looking for ways to make my game better, and as I have been playing D&D on maps since the beginning (back in the early 80), I have tried about everything when it comes to maps. My current kick is to use maptool on my laptop as my game table. It has a lot of advantages on ease of use but darn it, it’s just not as much fun as real miniatures.
There is just something very satisfying about grabbing your cool looking min and saying ‘I charge’ as you place it down next to an equally cool looking Orc. |
