I've debated this one for a while now with some of my friends (that care) and it's interesting to see what people think. So far it has come down to two categories: Physical appearence and skills. Which is your favorite one?

Physical
-------------------
Second Edition: A short lizard/dragon/hyena like thing

Third Edition: A semi-lizard dragon-like critter (I think this was a 3rd ed pic, but couldn't find a good 2nd ed pic or scan from MM1)

Fouth edition: A midget Dragon-kin.

World of Warcraft : A big nosed rat-like thing.

Everquest One: A small knoll like critter

The Lego: A blocky-duck like thing

Crazy Japanese Kobold: Japanese Dog-biped

Puppet Form: Awesome little critter.

Random Video game: Cute dog-bar thing

Skills
--------------------
Second edition: Monster ignore or always attack last. - 2 con and str (I think)
Third Edition: Like second edition, but had access to feats, but still the negatives.
Fourth Edition: Shifty, Bonus to stealth and thievery. No negative stats

How about paizo's take on kobold:

Bonus points to Paizo for making Kobolds scary rather than comical (well, some of those were scary, anyway). Personally, I like the 2nd ed picture, with perhaps a hint of Warcraft rattiness, but then again I've always run them more along the lines of germanic myth (mine spirits) than recent D&D's draconic angle. I think I've also described them in the past as coal-covered tiny men (with rat's tails) dressed in miner's garb.

And the Puppet Form is hilarious. Very Happy

2nd ed pic is my fav. While I like Pazio's mini dragon versions I just feel they don't fit the cowardly tactics that kobolds use in my head. Kobolds are tricky cunning but ultimately cowardly creatures and that look makes them far to majestic in my personal opinion to jive with that.

Hey aren't you the one doing a possible kobold comic? Maybe you should do a part of the strip of them arguing over which one is the real kobold. Wink

I prefer the 3rd edition kobold, particularly Paizo's version. 3.5 and 4e kobolds are pretty much the same beast really.

I like Tucker's Kobolds from that Dragon editorial back eons ago. Loved that one line about how the party would get the anticipatory gleams in their eyes when told of a dragon but blanche if kobolds were mentioned.

I was fond of 1e kobolds myself. I especially loved the illustration of Kurtulmak (yes, I'm sure I misspelled that, but I don't have my reference books with me at work, so Razz )

That said, I have a soft spot for the unillustrated character of Meepo from the Sunless citadel, even if it was 3.0
