Well, it looks like I have finally lost my last shread of sanity.
I have signed up for Nanowrimo.
::sigh::
Why am I posting this here? Several reasons.
1) I know that Nanowrimo has come up from time to time in October / November in the OD discussions with patrons...
2) The FLGS that I have mentioned in the YAY!!! thread is hosting the local regions get together to kick off Nanowrimo on Halloween night.
3) Nanowrimo advice says to tell everyone that you are participating in Nanowrimo so that when you feel like quitting, you won't out of the fear of looking pathetic in front of all the people you told.
So there we have it... I'm now certifiable... |

I think I'm going to do it too this year. So far various sorts of paralysis have kept me from signing up but I've got a good idea for a novel that has never had the chance to take shape. Maybe if I actually make some sort of public declaration I'll have no choice but to crank it out... |

Huzzah!
I do Nano every year, so I'm always thrilled to hear I'm not alone!
Haven't any clue what I'm writing about this year and probably won't until the day of.
Good Luck!

So, since you are an experienced "pro"... do you try to write a serious story? Or are you more concerned about pure output?
I'm getting mixed signals in the regional forums and I'm not sure if I should be trying to write something that I have an emotional investment in, or if I should just be looking for something I can crank out verbage for... something that I'm not attached to.
If that makes sense. |

Just cranking out verbage doesn't do anyone any good. It just proves you can pound a keyboard.
I'd vote for the emotionally-invested manuscript. Even if you "fail" to complete the Nanowrimo manuscript, the month of writing will get you a long way toward a rough draft.
It might get the ball rolling, even if you wind up taking a few more months before you want to, say, send it to an editor. _________________ Wolfgang Baur

Wow... sending it to an editor...
I think I can come up with good ideas... and my friends are REALLY pushing me to write... but I honestly don't have the confidence in my ability to write a novel... much less to think it will be good enough to send to an editor.
But I guess those are my own issues...
Ok...
I guess an honest attempt at a novel is what it will be... Wolfgang has decreed it!
Man, I must be crazy... |

Hey, everyone said I was crazy the first year I did it too.
I've even sent my attempts to editors.... no bites yet. Submitting is a harsh mistress.

I could be wrong but I'm thinking this is called "Heinlein's prescription":
(1) Write
(2) Finish
(3) Submit
(4) Repeat until successful
May be a different writer but it seems the most logical approach to take... |

One thing to keep in mind. Editors almost never take the time to track you down and torture you for sending them something they don't want to publish.
(remember though, I said "almost never" so don't blame me if the Baen death squad kicks down your door... ) |

I too have signed up for this wonderful emprise. I actually typed 2500 words before I signed up so to be fair on myself and not "cheat" I'll start a day late. I'd like to wish everyone the best of luck!
I do a lot of historical articles and other such writing so having a crack at a novel will certainly be challenging. I love writing but I'm not sure how I'll shape up as a writer of fiction. _________________ Justin the Big

Welcome to the insanity... glad I'm not alone.
Well, the local WriMo group had their kick off tonight. We all met at one of the local game stores (Dragon's Lair) at midnight and began our novels.
After almost 2 hours, I have 1500 words of the required 50,000
Not the drivel some are writing but to me, it is junk. But as a friend of mine reminded me tonight, it's 1500 words more than I had written before!
So... if I can just keep writing for 2 hours a day for the rest of the month I should be able to make the goal.
Insanity I tell ya! It's now 3 a.m. and I'm going to bed. |

I'm at 15000. yes, I'm deliberately building up a cushion.
That said, I have no idea where my novel is going yet.
