Hitch -

I disagree, though of course you know that already. I actually like the game quite a bit (so far, my party just reached 2nd level!). Of course, by the time we reach Paragon levels I could have a revelation that it was the worst thing ever.

I find, for myself, that if I want role playing in there as the DM, then the PCs will experience as much, or even more, roleplaying than they did in 3.5

I don't get nearly as hung up with the battlemat as I expected to. Your mileage may vary, of course.[/code]

The constant need to haul out the battlemat bugs me a little bit, but I'm getting used to it.

I tell myself it's D&D getting back in touch with its wargaming roots!

I've taken to using a larger table and keeping a gridded flip-chart pad with the areas already drawn on it on the table. That way I just flip to the right area, place the minis, and I'm set. I could wish gridded flip-pad charts were cheaper, but it's not that bad... you can get them at staples or office max.

I've used a battlemat since very early in my 3.0 playing days. So that certainly doesn't bother me.

However, it does bug me a bit that things like movement and power ranges are expressed only in number of squares, rather than in feet. It just strikes me as one of the places where 4e "dumbs down" the game a bit.

I'll agree with you on that one... my players recently threw a fit at the ranges for ranged weapons, noting that they sucked, because they thought the ranges were in feet, not squares. (yes, that is a true story, scarily enough)

You say the same thing about gin...

Very astute. Gin was designed to be just long enough to get people sleepy... thus acting like a hobby-based tranquilizer.

Unless you meant the libation...

I haven't seen much in 4E that appeals to me. As so many have already said, while it might be a fine game, it just doesn't look or feel like D&D!

I didn't know about Pathfinder until I read these message boards earlier today, but after visiting the website I have found it far more appealing then 4E. ...And that after only fifteen minutes with Pathfinder vs. weeks with 4E.

If the opportunity presents itself I would join a 4E group to play it and give it a fair shake, but I don't see myself converting my own campaign, ever.
