For me, a Good DM can have a great session. Or a few great sessions.
A Great DM has great campaigns -- a series of consistently greats sessions. They kind you want to come back to every week. |

Two of the best GMs I've played under had one tactic they implemented when creating story lines: knowing what happens when the PCs Don't intervene. (because no matter what you do, no one can plan for what a group of players will do, and that part you just have to deal with as you go along.)
And then they tossed multiple threads at the players and let them choose which story to pursue, knowing the time lines and events when the PCs aren't there let them concentrate solely on the story the players followed.
And weaving character histories into the stories and NPCs engages the Characters - and when the Characters are engaged the Players follow close behind. At least in my experience. |

The great DM is being able to read your players. Knowing when to skip past something because your players are bored. Noticing when they are interested in something so you can expand on it. Engaging the player who seems to have been left out of the last ten minutes of play. _________________ Overland Park dui attorney |

Oooh, spambots that post on topic just to get their signature link out in front of people... (and, of course, to get their signature link indexed by Google) _________________ John Ling
