In addition to working with game design, I am trying to break into writing fiction and I have a question about some writers guidelines. My questions are in regard to a "writing sample". Let's say the request for a submission requires a writing sample of 20 pages (to write a media tie-in or shared world novel, for example).

1) Can this be an excerpt of a larger story (i.e., novel) or is it expected to be a complete short story?
2) Can I send this writing sample to more than one publisher, as I am not requesting publication of the actual sample?

Curious if anyone has any experience or insight. Thanks for your help.

I don't have practical experience with regard to fiction writing, but my RPG experience says the answer to both questions is, "Yes."
