My problem with WOTC is not anything they have done as a business; it’s more that they are a business. As a business, they need to make money, and that goal needs to be their number 1 goal. The company that I work for is very much the same and needs to be if they want to continue to stay around.

But for me, D&D is a hobby. I play it because I love it. What I want is what’s best for the game from my perspective. And what is best for WOTC has not been best for me. When enough of their decisions are not ones that are better for me, I start to ask myself do I need WOTC. Simply put, is what they add to the game worth the things they do that make the game worse for me.

For me that answer is no. They do more harm then good from my perspective. And the things that I really need for the game (a good group of people to play with) they don’t provide.

Sum it up by saying that what is good for WOTC is not good for me.

The best way that I can think of to illustrate my point is that I have been GMing for a convention in Princeton for the past few years. The convention has been going on for over 30 years. Each year that I have worked with it, if we broke even on the convention and covered our costs, we felt lucky. But the key is that we don’t do it to make money. We put in a lot of work because we love it. My best times in gaming come for this convention. Nevertheless, if our focus were profit instead of fun, we would have folded up tents long ago.

Totally off-topic, what convention is that and when please? Smile My friends and I like to go to gaming cons, and that's not too far from CT where I live. We are in search of a new one, so I'm collecting information.

On topic, that's a good way of looking at it. I personally don't think though that WotC "owes" me much. There's so much 3.5 stuff out there I'm good for 20 years. Plus I can dip my toe into the 4E waters when I want to.

John (Zherog) beat me to it, but yeah it's Princecon. It's in the middle of March (not sure the exact weekend, but I can get it if you need it).

I'm in the same boat as you varianor, I have been collecting stuff from the early 80's, so I don't have any shortage of D&D stuff. I think I need another 4 or 5 years of playing 3.5 before I will know if I like it Laughing

I have tons of material all the way back to Basic edition, so the ideas are limitless - plus we have the internet chocked full of more gaming goodness than you can shake a stick at!
But I have noticed that many d20 products are going for a steal...and I've "stolen" a few this week! Get 'em while they're hot!

I am interested in good sales too if people have found them. My main interest would be in the WOTC 3.5 books that are still missing from my shelves. Not a lot of good gaming stores in my area, and I have yet to see any that have a sale on the old 3.5 stuff.

I'll start the list.

I know all of Goodman Game's d20 products are on sale until the end of the year -- most of them for $2! -- at the Paizo store. That includes Dungeon Crawl Classics, Wicked Fantasy, and the Complete Guides. (and probably other stuff, too). However, that sale price is for PDF copies.

Anybody know of anybody selling physical copies of stuff cheap? Throw some link love at your fellow gamers!

Green Ronin was also having a good sale, it may end very soon though. I'm happy they decided to continue having their products available through print on demand with a new 3rd Era imprint.

Is that sale on their website, or elsewhere? Does it cover physical books, or PDF versions?

Anybody else have any links to other sales of publishers trying to sell off any d20 stock before the end of the year? Otherwise, it looks like I might have to resort to eBay...

I got a number of Green Ronin books from Paizo, but I think they also have a sale direct:

http://paizo.com/store/sale/greenRoninApocalypseSale

The Sale through paizo ends tomorrow!

I'm getting the feeling that WoTC will take the 3rd edition articles off from their site soon enough. Better to save them to the HD so I don't lose access to them forever. So far I've downloaded the whole Epic Insight, Savage Progressions, Bardic Knowledge, Fey Feature, Monster Mayhem, Elite Opponents and Spellbook series and parts of other articles series, all the erratas and quite some web enhancements and free adventures.

That's an interesting point. But don't they still have older edition stuff available? I recall free PDFs of old modules, for example. It's been a long time since I've been to their website, though. (and I can't go now because my employer blocks it.)

They used to have a lot of old stuff, and some of it might still be there. But with the various website overhauls they've undergone since they first announced 4E, navigating their site archives is something akin to a dungeon delve, and there are a lot of dead ends and broken links. Expect a headache and possibly some disappointment if you decide to proceed.
