I am pleased to announce our first Kickstarter RPG project called Southern Rising. Southern Rising is a roleplaying game in which players take on the roles of average citizens (businessmen, school teachers, public servants, police officers, and/or soldiers) trying to stop the rising of the confederacy by any means necessary.

Set in 2011 the game allows modern player characters to take on undead soldiers of the Confederacy, making this a mash-up of genres. It is a skill-based table-top RPG which begs the question, "What if the South did rise again - as UNDEAD!

Southern Rising is not the typical skill-based role playing game. it has a unique twist. It is three games in one! You can play the default setting (modern vs. undead with civil war technology), Alternate History (supernatural elements during the civil war) or a strict historical campaign. The rulebook gives information on all three!

There are many rewards for backers including allowing contributors to write for the game and access to the game development process. Here's a chance to get in on the ground floor.

Please consider backing this project and making Southern Rising a reality.

you can find more info about the project here http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/295167887/southern-rising-rpg

As a Southerner and redneck, I am intrigued, and curious about the historical research that will hopefully be going into this game (at least for the historical rpg section). Got any sample of that aspect, and how do you plan on going over the complex historical situations and motivations in a way that will actually hold a typical player's or DM's attention?

@Cerunnos thank you for inquiring. Along with your typical rpg attributes (strength, agility, intellect, wisdom, endurance, charisma), The historical figures will have attributes for leadership, tendencies in battle, influence on morale, motivations, knowledge of opponents, combat experience, decisiveness, gamble and a few others. For example I often reflect on Ewell's inability to take the high ground at Gettysburg and would it have been different if Jackson (who's tendency was to occupy the high ground) would have changed the outcome.

As far as historical research I have taught history for over 15 years and have given a few "unofficial" tours of historical battlefields. Everything will be thoroughly researched. However since the book has multiple sections. I'm not sure how long each entry will be. I am leaning towards 1-2 pages for battle info, 2 pages on leaders, smaller entries on weapons, etc. I will post an update and provide an excerpt from Antietam on the kickstarter page.

Ultimately play testing will determine which of these categories will go into the final product. We would love to have you participate in the playtesting should the funding be successful

Well I mean even more than just the battles, historically speaking, going all the way to things like daily life and the complex attitudes, motivations, actual politics and debates, and other various stuff that make it an rpg instead of just a shoot-em-up. Smile
I am NOT a history buff, but as a guy from the South you kinda get to realize how things were a lot more complex than most portrayals you'll see outta stuff like hollywood and whatnot (as well as get a bit tired of the common oversimplification), and an RPG just seems like it might provide an interesting way of portraying it.

Sorry, wasn't following. Absolutely! Each region details culture, economics, customs, dress, etc. regional interests and in a sense political motivations are mentioned such as "what it means to be a Virginia."
