I recently bought the PDF, and I'm very happy with it, but a friend of mine that DMs a lot of my games raised a very interesting point when I let him look at it: Why are souls so relatively cheap compared to the other stuff you can buy (names especially) in there? A mortal selling their immortal soul should get more than 500gp worth in return, even if they're just a peasant; not to mention that there are certain classes that would benefit from having someone else own their name, and yet they can get quite a pretty penny in addition to something some players may consider nothing but a bonus.
The name question aside, why was that price (500gp) chosen as the price of someone's soul? |

We discussed a good bit about soul bargaining, and I'd think of these as starting prices.
We had a range of ideas on what you could do while bargaining with your soul, with both Heaven and Hell, but we also wanted to make a soul part of the planar economy with a GP value.
Part of the problem, to me at least, was that it's easy for a PC to be an "anti-hero" who sells his soul for an exorbitant price but suffers no in game consequences. That might be why the final price seems so cheap.
I'd have to double check the exact discussion though.
