There was a thread about this digital atlas in the design forums, but not here!

Open for discussion, requests, praise, condemnation, and any other comments about the Midgard Atlas app. Do you like it?

As I've said in the enworld thread I really like it but its lacking with no textual context, I really think that the app could become a grand gazetteer of Midgard.

So a future update should bring text pop-ups for one of the city maps, as a way to show the public what it looks and feels like, maybe a bunch of other features as well and then we will have the in app purchases.

By pressing on the compass the main view will gray out and the a menu will appear on top of it, one of the options will be for in app purchases and it will appear as a small closed book on top of the region it belongs to.
Once bought you will have an open book icon that just like the current city stars will load a new map only with text pop-ups and more.

So the Margrave will have one and so will Zobeck, the Ironcrag, the North, Morgau & Doresh and every other region that actually got a book for it.

Anyway the options are endless and I can keep writing for hours if only I had the time. It would be interesting to hear what you have in store for the atlas Wolfgang.

Yep, we thought about turning it from an atlas into a gazetteer, but right now that's out of scope. But the temptation to try it is certainly there!

In-app purchases were another source of discussion, but it's a bunch of work to implement, and long-form text is a really different experience than looking at a map. I don't want to just dump text onto a page and reinvent the wheel (those gazetteers already exist, after all!).

But yes, I hear those requests, and we're moving ahead one step at a time. If people like the Atlas, there's always time to add to it or release a Gazetteer separately. And I do have a discussion with the developer coming up.

I thought it was great. So much easier to move around in than a similar PDF of the map. The zoom in of the cities is nice. I do think text pop-ups with descriptions or at least the building names in the city maps would be nice. But I really like the app and view it as the first step towards how cool campaign maps could be in the tablet era.

I also posted a mini-review of the app at The Iron Tavern:

Cool, thanks for your critique and review! And I may need to share that Iron Tavern link somewhere.... Hm.

Yes, we'll add a city or two in November, after the Midgard book launch, and likely the pin placement will happen then as well.

There's also an update planned for late January with new features.

Sort of what it sounds like. You'll be able to put a marker on the map to indicate sites, that is, you "pin" a label on the map.

I'd like to see a cool map for those of us without an ipad or iphone.

A poster map would also sell well I think.

Sadly, poster maps cost about $20 to $30 retail and require special handling and fees to mail flat/roll into tubes. Every publisher I talked to about them complains that there is little to no demand, and lots of extra work.

So.... A print poster map is going to be highly dependent on a Kickstarter or the like. It could happen. But not this year.

+1 for a Kickstarter ... perhaps also to fund the map app on different platforms?

I'd be happy with a simple PDF map of Midgard on one page so ican really get my head around the geographic relationships of the Western Ocean, Mharoti, Ishadia/Nuria Natal/Khandiria, the Northlands, Seven Cities, Crossroads and Wasted West etc etc

That's on page 15. Though it's a half-pager, it shows what is where.
