Hi,

Setting up this thread for patrons to discuss the Midgard Bestiary for D&D 4e now that it's available.

Cheers

First: it is a lovely book.

Second: there are some nice, creative, monsters in here.

Third: I have recommended it to several people, no idea if they bought it or not.

I'll comment on some specific monsters later, but I wanted to say those things first.

Thanks Zaukrie! Would be great to hear your comments on individual monsters.

Cheers

I ended up purchasing it with the credit left over from Kobold Quarterly. I bought it mainly because I had a game coming up and hoped it would inspire me. The other monster books I have are before the revised monster creation rules. This is the best monster book I've seen in a while. I liked it enough that I even blogged about it on WotC's site. I was going to post a review on the kobold store but figured I should read some more of it first.

My players didn't appreciate the spectral wolves.

I take it that's a plus from the DM perspective. Very Happy

I used some more monsters in the last adventure although some were reflavored. I discovered I wasn't sure how to use the Psilocybe Mycolid. Specifically how is the aura supposed to work. Can he automatically slide anyone in the aura 3 spaces at the start of their turn and every turn after that until they save? Since Hallucinogenic Spores hits multiple targets how many illusions does it create? Does it work off the highest character's intelligence modifier? Do you add them all together? In my case he targeted two people with -1 modifiers. I ruled he creates 1 illusion since I wanted to make use of the ability.

THe Psilocybe Mycolid first appeared in the Imperial Gazeteer. As such I cannot take credit for this creature, however, as a designer on the book, here is how I see things.

The Hallucination is a spore (ie poison) effect. Once a creature starts its turn within the aura, so it has to be adjacent, its under the effect. At the end of that turn you can make a save against the effect. If you have save, it doesn't affect you on future turns.

Example: Dave the fighter charges the mycolid. At the end of his turn he saves. At the start of his next turn nothing happens.

Jeff the rogue charges the mycolid. At the end of his turn, he does not save. At the start of his next turn nothing happens. He keeps charging and eventually saves. At the start of his next turn nothing happens.

I would rule that even if the PC moves in and out of the aura, if they've saved once this encounter, they don't have to do it again.

THANK YOU! This is a great addition to anyone's 4th edition bookshelf. I just picked this up and I'm greatly enjoying it!
