My group uses action points. It is nice to get an occasional boost when lady luck hits you hard. |

I like them for a different reason, and that is roleplaying.
Scenario: The party wizard's beloved bat familiar has just been slain by a goblin sniper. In near-mindless fury, he runs at the goblin with his quarterstaff to avenge his friend--
--and misses badly.
Other Scenario: The party wizard's beloved bat familiar has just been slain by a goblin sniper. In near-mindless fury, he runs at the goblin with his quarterstaff to avenge his friend--
--and, spending an action point hits! The wizard's dearest friend has been avenged. _________________

| Sometimes. Mostly I use Hero Points for a larger, grander result. |

Just curious, is there any difference between those Eberron AP and the UA ones? _________________

| Not in my games. Most of the players forget they have them. |

Imagine your character dying, and then the DM says, 'Pity I forgot to remind you about your Action points.'
Imagine the DM being thrown out the window... _________________

I didn't say I don't remind them, I just wait until it seems like all hope is lost and then remind them. It's well worth the look on their face. |

Action points? No, though I can see the usefulness of such a system and would probably have used it if it had been included in the core 3.5e books.
I do, however, use hero points and similar points of various types when I want player actions to influence future situations or when I want to encourage a particular type of play.
An example of what I'm talking about can be seen in one of the later AoW adventures (I forget which one) that uses "victory points" to determine what happens when the PCs are trying to defend Alhaster. |
