DR makes sense as simulation, but it bugs the *crap* out of me as a designer because it means that combats run longer.

And generally, D&D doesn't need longer combats.

I think DR is best used as "virtual hit points" for a creature whose hit points are a bit too low (due to Con score, HD, whatever) to fully fit their CR.

The "golf bag" term was coined shortly after the 3.5 DR rules were released. The premise was that a character would carry a huge assortment of weapons in order to overcome DR -- a cold iron weapon, an adamantine weapon, an alchemical silvered weapon, etc. With all these various weapons, it would be like a golfer pulling the right club for the situation out of his/her bag.

Ah, I get it. Thanks. Come to think of it, I've heard something similar said about wands in Monty Haul campaigns.

I guess I'll just have to learn to live with dissapointment, unless Varianor revisits this thread.

John, if you're me, please send me your address. 207 claim files including 17 fatalities and 4 dismemberments will arrive in short order!

I've found in my own campaigns that doubling the bonus to damage is all the magical enhancements need to be effective again. My players will almost always take a +1 to hit, +2 to damage over a d6 that may be resisted by an enemy.
