Dark Urban Adventure? Logue AND Baur?

Oh, hell yes.

Hmm, I guess it was bound to happen that Wolfgang would parse out an OD project. It sounds cool, but it does give me pause a bit.

Yeah, it gives ME pause a bit too, but I've seen Nick's work and I think it's going to click.

The reality for me is that I'm going to be poking at 4E with a stick for a couple months, trying to figure out if there's a way to tame it or whether it should be released back into the wild.

I'm very grateful to have a talent like Nick carrying Open Design forward through the winter and spring, and I think it might be good for patrons to get another perspective on design as well.

But we'll see. Perhaps the Eberron and Pathfinder fans will not follow Nick over here. And perhaps they will.

Given that there's already a new patron based on the name, that's a good sign. I think. Smile

I'm stoked about the project and about the designer and about being a patron. Can't wait to help out.

I'm incredibly stoked to be a part of this amazing process. Thanks for having me Wolfgang! Can't wait to see what kind of design essays people are interested in seeing, and I am ready as all get out to roll up my sleeves and get down and bloody with the fine patrons here. Let's make something truly horrid together shall we, then we can unleash it on our players with sick glee.

Rock!

Nick

I guess my hesitation is because I don't know Nicolas's work at all. I heard the interview at The Tome, and he seems to have lots of people praising his adventures. I'm very likely to jump in just because I've been a patron since #2.

Something I would find very interesting, as a fan of OD and patron, is a behind-the-scenes look at how the decision to have OD5 be done by someone other than Wolfgang, and why Nicolas was chosen.

I just need to start reading up on steampunk. I love the idea but my knowledge of it is very limited. Any suggestions on where to start?

It's less mysterious than it seems. I'm completely fried from launching KQ, Empire of the Ghouls. The only way to get some sanity before the con season hits was to find someone who could tackle OD5....

Fortunately, I know Nick's work from Pathfinder and Eberron, and I think he's got an approach that will work for Zobeck and for Eberron fans. I saw his work in an unedited state (from the "Ecology of the Barghest" article in KQ), so I had a good sense of what his turnovers are like, which is always important.

So ultimately, I considered a couple other people (and they may yet do a future project, who knows), but I decided to go with someone who has done dark, moody urban stuff to do a dark, moody urban Zobeck adventure.

Plus he's just a persistent bastard. Very Happy

China Mieville does a damn fine job in Perdido Street Station. Naomi Novik does slightly cheesy Napoleonic dragons that might fit some weird definitions of steampunk.

Iron Kingdom RPG stuff, Jay Lake's clockpunk books (Mainspring), and oh, there's more. Zobeck is actually fairly light on the steampunk compared to some of those.

If you're interested in seeing a fully realized Clockwork/Steampunk world, trying reading this wonderful free webcomic < http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/ >. The Girl Genius Universe is clockwork from the bottom to the top, and can give you an idea of what it's like. Beware of overloading on it, though, there are YEARS worth of comics at three pages a week. It's quite addictive.

It's done by Phil (and wife Kaja) Foglio, whom you may remember from the old "What's New With Phil And Dixie" in Dragon magazine back in the day. They call it "Gaslamp Fantasy" because when they first started working on it, there were products out there with "Steampunk" in the name and they didn't want their story confused with the existing stuff, but is actually the same sort of thing.

Giant Zepplin fleets, Robot "Clanks", Frankenstein's Monster "Constructs", Gentlemen Adventurers, and Mad Science galore. They are working on a GURPS book, but no eta yet.
