| I would be careful with some of the creatures on the list to make sure that they aren't too powerful and that they are all humanoids (I'm assuming that you are using the 3.5/Pathfinder reincarnate rules). For instance, centaurs are monstrous humanoids so shouldn't be on the humanoid reincarnate list (otherwise there is no reason for the character not to come back as a medusa or gargoyle either) and most giants are too powerful (even though they are now humanoids in the Pathfinder rules). |

Well, I sort of assumed he was looking for the widest range of options, but the game balance point isn't a bad thing to consider.
Reincarnation has always been a bit of an oddball, though. Mechanically, the risks of coming back as something unplayable or disadvantaged have to be there, or the spell is too easily abused.
But if I were re-designing it, I'd propose using reincarnation as a form of reskinning: You can look like anything you want, but your soul is still the same, so you're just an elf trapped in an ogre's body, or what have you. Could be fun, without changing the PC's stats much at all (maybe racial modifiers, but nothing more). _________________ Wolfgang Baur

| I've never had to deal with Reincarnation in my game: In 30+ years of play, no one has ever let their character risk the possible consequences of Reincarnation. Never. The players have gone on long and dangerous quests to find Resurrection or Wish spells for their fallen comrades, bypassing easily available Reincarnations. |

I'm in the same boat as Amy. My players -- through all the various games -- have always opted for any option other than reincarnate. _________________ John Ling

Actually, I've always thought the only reason to play reincarnate is to roll the dice and hope you come back as Phoebus, the lizardman from the original Rogues Gallery.
Heck, I'd use a wish for a result like that! |

Man, apparently your players are a bunch of scaredy cats. My PC's love to gamble on the possibility of coming back as a monstrous humanoid and I think that they actually would prefer that the reincarnate list be longer. Obviously there is always the possibility of a character coming back as something that really is unplayable, but I generally reserve such a fate for characters that are truly obnoxious.
At any rate, I'd love to hear more ideas for this list, and maybe I'll compile when I get some free time. |

This is what I'm doing. I will have centaurs on the list but they will be medium sized, like toy horse centaurs. I'm going to have some kind of stat mod for the physical stats and then if there is anything special about the physical body I will add that in as well, like Scent or Low-light vision. No spell-like abilities. There might be a supernatural ability in there but I need to go through my list.
Thanks for the input everyone.
I'll post it here when I get it done. |

I've stuck a scroll of reincarnate in my game to have someone playing a half-ogre barbarian roll and come back as a halfling. I ended up letting him stick with human, because I had a feeling he woulda quit if he had to go down two size categories.
Ahh good times. |
