The fires of creation burn hot! Today, Open Design is launching its most ambitious design project to date: the world of Midgard! You can be part of this rare opportunity to design a published campaign setting. Your co-authors in this endeavor will be me, Jeff Grubb, and Brandon Hodge.

Midgard is the setting for my own homebrew D&D campaign. Sections of it have been revealed publicly over the years through articles in Kobold Quarterly magazine and in Open Design projects such as Courts of the Shadow Fey, Tales of the Old Margreve, and Dwarves of the Ironcrags. Most of it exists only as hint and allusions, though, and scribbled notes in my campaign notebook. Which is where you come in!

You can become a patron of the Midgard project and get behind-the-scenes access and input into the creation of Midgard’s seven regions. Add your original ideas, or even elements of your own home campaign: NPCs, magic items, heroes, villains, towns, cities -- even whole pantheons. Along the way, I'll host regular live online chats for patrons and designers. (Plus other fun surprises.)

The finished worldbook will be available to patrons as a limited-edition hardcover, and to the public as a softcover. Among other perks patrons will also receive the Worldbuilder’s Handbook: a collection of worldbuilding essays from me, Jeff Grubb, and others.

The gates of the world have opened! Join the Midgard design project as a patron.

Very Happy

I'm glad to hear it! Honestly, working on a world design with Jeff and Brandon is going to be a treat, and I'm excited by the possibilities.

Any questions, just let me know.

Generic? Pathfinder? 4E? Both?

Question regarding major donor level membership:

On the project page and product page it says it is $149.75 for a major donor but on the product page in the store it says you have to set the quantity field to '6' during checkout which translates to $179.70. What is correct?

Yes!

As usual, rules that we use are the ones the patrons want. Based on current comments, tweets, and replies, I'd say that Pathfinder, 4E D&D, and the AGE system from Dragon Age RPG are all going to get attention. No one has mentioned OGL 3E yet, but it's so close to PF that perhaps it's not necessary.

The patrons who sign up soon will have the most to say about it. I suppose I could put up the first patron poll sometime this week.

Looks great!

One question- the pricing seems a bit off for the major donor tier? Setting it to six makes the total $179.70.

I'm in! Now you're stuck with me!

Smile Way looking forward to a PF setting that is not Golarion. Not that there's anything wrong with Golarion but what I've seen of Midgard appeals to me far, far more.

Ok, now I can't wait to see how this develops. I downloaded the file from the patronage page but its just a map? Are any details already "in progress" etc? Forgive my ignorance as I'm usually too busy on this little website I run to keep up on things Wink

Sound very exciting! Smile What different things will senior patrons be doing? I imagine there won't be so much adventure writing... but what sort of pitches will they be throwing for?

What is a regional discussion?
Does it specific to a region include any and/or all of: polls, brainstorms, reviews, playtests and pitches for weather patterns, legends, monsters, forms of government, details of geography, places of interest, ocean currents, towns, guilds, secret societies, new gods, flora, diseases, fauna, archdevils, dungeons, nations, PC races, tribes, angels or pantheons?

Are regional discussions a by regions divided Senior Patron Forum like in the projects so far, as far as they had senior patronage?

What is the mechanical track?

How many regions does the regional preview PDF contain for critique?

As a Senior patron one is restricted in the access to three regional discussions. This is partial patronage. How can he take part in brainstorms in other regions? How can a Standard Patron with no access to reginal discussions take part in brainstorms or submit region specific monsters?

What is the difference between the Worldbuilder’s Handbook and the 8-essay course in worldbuilding? Is it the publishing format and/or content?

"The regions above will be designed as they reach their commission, ..."
Is patronage for each region sold separately in addition to patronage to the whole project?

Good questions afbeer!

I was wondering about the difference between the essays and the handbook myself.

When I checked, that's supposed to be 5 for 149.75. In fact, that's what it shows now.
