The next Open Design project won’t really launch until November, but why let that stop a round of excellent speculation on which project will be chosen next?
The senior patrons have already been discussing what they’d like to see, resulting in a tentative list of options, at least half of which already have full outlines.
Give it a look and vote in the poll, and help choose which projects will be up for commission.
Angels of Our Better Nature (D&D): A truly experimental plot features angels as the main villains, plus factions among the city and the angels. The secret behind the angels is the final twist, and removing them from the city means that the city is restored. This one is full of surprises... And it’s the sort of experimental adventure unlikely to be offered anywhere else.
Court of the Shadow Fey (D&D): An adventure that features as much stealth and intrigue as it does combat, and takes place in the Shadowfell/Plane of Shadows. The court of the Moonlit King is a place of giants, black fey, and abominations of the living dark. The whole thing pivots on when the party is unmasked, at which point it becomes a more traditional (but epic) action adventure. More detail here
Kobold Bestiary (D&D): I love monsters and I will keep pitching this project until someone says yes. Master monster designers Wolfgang Baur and Skip Williams teach all the elements of monster design, and the patrons have the option to contribute beasts to the compendium! This will also include the Monday Monsters from this site, plus creatures from previous Open Design adventures, more than 150 monsters in all. Massive!
Lords of Lost Arbonesse (Modern or D&D): Pulp undersea adventure that does a “lost Atlantis” premise right! Careful design to make undersea adventuring work, plus material on the deep Abyss of the darkest ocean. This could tie in with Pathfinder/Golarion as a drowned city of the Thassilonian Empire days (already canonical west of Sandpoint), it could tie into a Modern/Cthulhu game, or it could be pure fantasy. Think Deep Ones and their ancient artifacts meet Indiana Jones style PCs… More detail here
Slaves of the Red Goddess (D&D): Bruce Cordell is writing a take on the “Kingdom of the Ghouls”, so it seems only fair that Open Design do a riff on the Far Realms. This Cthulhoid-tinged adventure features the cult of the Red Goddess, and attempt to summon Things from the Realms Beyond, and an assault on the goddess’s followers stronghold in the Grey Marshes. Adaptable to any campaign, it features a “points of light” approach, a dozen new monsters, and a set of ruthless arcane and divine villains. Possibly some emphasis on the Glass Books, Slave Wands, and other new magical items.
Tales of Greater Zobeck (D&D): Also known as Halls of the Mountain King, this adventure anthology would pick up where the current Tales of Zobeck project leaves off, and would include both a short gazetteer of the dwarven clans plus a set of interlinked dungeon adventures written by patrons and professionals. Each patron/author would contribute a dungeon level or major encounter area, with the whole adding up to a massive mini-campaign in the Zobeck style, with a dwarven twist.
Which is your favorite? The winners from the poll will be put up for commission in November.

With a little luck, one may be written by a guest author and one by the patrons (the bestiary) and one by me.
Ok, that would require a LOT of luck. Chances are it's a single project for this winter. _________________ Wolfgang Baur

| Should there be a radio button for Tales of Greater Zobeck? |

Yes, there should, but I couldn't get the poll to accept more than 5 choices.
And of the choices on the list, Tales of Greater Zobeck is the one I suspect will have the largest built-in audience, based on the reaction to the current Tales of Zobeck anthology.
So I'm giving it a pass into the finals. _________________ Wolfgang Baur

REALLY tough choice...
I voted Shadow Fey...
BUT I will be tempted to vote for Angels too... Sounds very interesting...
It's a good thing Zobeck gets a free pass right now...
My preferences so far...
1- Zobeck / Fey tied
2- Angels
3- Lords thingy...
4- Sorry, could not care less about 4E...
BTW, does 4E/3E versus 3E/4E in the presentations mean anything?
Like one system is more likely than the other or it's just the way you were typing and I'm reading too much into this?

As a contributor to the Monday Monsters, I might be a bit biased. But I voted for Kobold Bestiary. _________________ John Ling

Experimental stuff about mad angels just about hits the spot right now. I think there are interesting lines to develop concerning angels in 4e, so that would be my suggestion.
The Red Goddess maybe sounds promising though I know very little about the elements mentioned.
edit: That's bizarre. I could have sworn I've seen "Bleakshire" as a name for the northern Zobeck Province region shown in the "Castle Shadowcrag Environs" map and perhaps to form the setting for #6, but I can't find any mention of it in the files I have. Am I imagining this?

Provided its 3e the Angels project is my choice. I would like to see the monster book as a distant 2nd, although if you hadn't already given Tales the nod to the next round that would have been a close 2nd with the monster book a distant 3rd.
I will say this about the monster book - I love monsters and enjoy the Monday Monsters, but I look around and realize I have a LOT of monster books for 3e and a new one would need to stand out in some way. |

You're reading too much into it. Although....
Originally, Courts of the Shadow Fey was a straight 3E Plane of Shadow pitch, and the Bestiary seems like it might be more valuable to 4E players.
I think these could all be done for either system. However, Zobeck is explicitly a 3E setting, and Slaves of the Red Goddess has always seemed very 4E to me. _________________ Wolfgang Baur

Yes, I think Bleakshire may have appeared on the rough draft map of Shadowcrag environs, but it was removed from the final draft because "shire" is not exactly in keeping with the central/eastern european roots of Zobeck.
But I'd have to check the Shadowcrag posts to be sure. _________________ Wolfgang Baur

Lords of Lost Arbonesse!
PULP? That does sound like a lot of fun!
Finally a possibility for Open Design to show the world how to do Cthulhu right? Sounds even funner!
Seriously, I love the idea to maybe leave classic fantasy or even D&D. But even in D&D and a fantasy setting I still think this is the most intersting choice: Past underwater adventures have the tendency to be either just gimicky (which becomes pale fairly quickly) or to ignore the problems of being underwater too much. Bescause of this I really would like to see how to approach this right.
Could be very instructive, and even applicable for other unfriendly environments! |
