Hey guys and gals, I asked this on G+ and got some great answers, but I thought I would pose this to the Kobolds.
I am coming back to gaming after a long hiatus (AD&D 2nd Ed). I have a somewhat vague memory of my DM getting us all jacked up to play Ravenloft and then handing out a TPK in the first few hours.
I missed all of 3.0 and 3.5 and was wondering if there are any iconic books I should pick up for flavor/history/examples of amazing design or storytelling? Or even pre-3.0? Shoot me some of your favorites and why!

Git yerself some old copies of Dungeon and Dragon magazine at your local hobby store and just read. They sell cheap these days and can give you some great inspiration.

It's hard to know where to start, but I think that the Sunless Citadel is an excellent intro adventure, the Necromancer's Handbook is a great and flavorful 2E book, and .... Oh, the Rise of the Runelords is a great adventure path from the 3E era. Book of Vile Darkness is fun as well, if you like the slightly darker side of things.
I could probably list 20 more highlights, but.... What sort of adventures do you like best? Are you running an adventure, building your homebrew, mining for materials, just want a good read?

It would be mining for materials, good reads and teaching material on creative RPG design/flavor. I plan to pretty much play Pathfinder, but I want to learn from/experience a little bit of the best of the older editions.

So, if I start picking up some Dungeon magazines, any favorites? I've heard a lot about Age of Worms (124-135), but those are pretty pricey online right now.
EDIT: Also, any favorite places to find the best deal on these? Checking Ebay, Craigslist, online stores, etc has me convinced I have no idea what's reasonable- the prices vary so wildly.

Age of Worms was great but by no means the necessary focus of your search. At my local comic book store they are on sale for 50 cents each. I'd call around to your local stores and see what they're asking. And hey, grabbing a copy of Kobold Quarterly ain't a bad idea either. There are lots to choose from and I think there are some package deals still going.

And I am pretty sure you can still get pdf bundles of year 1 and 2 of KQ at the KQ store...

All issues of Kobold Quarterly, of course. I think you'll find KQ has a wonderfully old-school feel, combined with an extraordinary level of quality (this is especially true for #20, the most recent issue).
If you don't want to just feel old-school, but actually want to BE old-school, look for the Dragon Magazine CD archive. The first 250 issues of Dragon, plus all 7 issues of The Strategic Review (Dragon's predecessor, also published by TSR). I have a set, and I treasure it.
