One more for fun!
What was the flukiest die roll you ever saw?
Here's one of mine:
The player wants to sneak up on two guards in an open clearing in daylight. Rather than disallow it as impossible, the GM says he can do it if he gets a 20 on his Stealth roll and the guards get a 1 on their Perception, hoping the player can get the obvious hint. The GM is trying to encourage some kind of plan involving a distraction or a clever bluff.
The player, who's not sharpest dagger in the dragon hoard decides to go for the GM's near-impossible odds and dammit if he doesn't get his 20. I remember the group insisting the GM roll his d20. And up comes that 1, right on schedule.
The game then ground to a halt while we pretty much spent the next half hour staring at the dice. |

Back in the early 1980’s, when 1st edition was the only edition, one of my players owned a hobby shop. (Before you ask: Hobbicraft Junction in the K-Mart Plaza, Daytona Beach, Florida. It was open from the mid 1970's through the late 1980's.) Needless to say, a lot of impromptu playing went on there. In those days we were using a very simple initiative system: When it was time for a fight to start, each side would roll 1d6. If the DM’s roll was higher, the monsters attacked first. If the player’s roll was higher, the characters went first. Ties were re-rolled.
So one day a melee was about to start (remember, melee is what we called combat back in those days). I rolled 1d6 for the monsters, and Bill, one of the players, rolled 1d6 for the characters. It was a tie – not really unusual. As normal, we both re-rolled. The re-roll was also a tie. A bit unusual, but still happened occasionally. We both re-rolled again.
About this time a customer came up to the counter. Steve, the shop’s owner, turned to take care of her. Bill and I continued to roll our six siders. Again and again, they were all ties.
Steve finished up with the customer, bagged her purchases, and turned back to the table. He watched us roll our six siders yet again. “What, you’re still rolling initiative? I thought the fight would be over by now!”
It took about half a dozen more rolls before one of us finally came out ahead.
I wish I had counted the number of consecutive ties we rolled that day. It was probably less than a hundred, but not by much. Nothing remotely similar has happened in the quarter century since then. |

Playing Space Master back in the day, and ICE, our group would put the amazing rolls (over 500) on the fridge at my buddies place. So we had a list about 10-12 long. The highest was 1300 (ish).
My char was piloting a ship and we were fleeing the bad guys and I made a pilot roll of 96X (can't remember the last digit) with the last 4 rolls being 100. Pretty crazy. |
