Cheers

At this point I'm still in the 3.5/Pathfinder camp. I tried running some 4E this weekend, and it just doesn't have the maturity yet-- things like mounted combat, vehicles, etc.

I'd also be very open to Modern/Cthulhu.

Hi Ben,

Mounted combat rules are in the DMG (although they're quite sketchy); vehicles and lots of exotic mounts along with dozens of magical and alchemical items (magic biscuits!) are in Adventurer's Vault. The game is being built up quite quickly, I think.

Cheers

Edition Preference is a looooong way down my priority list to be honest. Actually my main criteria is the level of patron involvement: I'm much more in favour of the Tales of Zobeck or Kobold Bestiary because they give the chance for really meaty contributions - not that Wrath has left us out in the cold or anything!

Other than that, its the story that attracts me. Sure certain adventures seem particularly appropriate for one system or another, but that's a relatively minor issue. Having converted 1st edition AD&D scenarios to Games Workshop's (non D20) Judge Dredd game, well if I can manage that, I can convert anything; I forget exactly how the bard became a cross-dressing karaoke ninja, but the story and flavour was intact and that's the main thing.

Get me unboard with the idea and then we can talk about system.... but I know that other people (many other people apparently) have a different view.

Yeah, I think I'm still in favor of Edition Neutral stuff for the moment.

I voted 4e earlier, and I'll stand by that because that's what I'm running, but so many people are chiming in about 3e/Pathfinder/4e, and the Poll is sooooooo close that it seems it'd be a waste to lose 25% of your patrons due to edition.

/shrug - The fantasy stuff is still the same, regardless of edition. Us DM's can switch it up however we need to.

To me it would be interesting to understand these aspects:

How many people who PREFER to have it 4E would completely ignore/disregard it if it was 3.5, and how many who want it to be 3.5 would completely ignore it if it was done for 4e.

I'm in the second camp. I have zero interest in 4e. I have players in my group that also play 4e and would likely have answered 4e in your poll, but would still have potentially played/purchased a quality 3.5 adventure. My players who are 3.5 focused are anti-4e, but the reverse is not true.

That is a powerful insight right there, and next time I post this poll, I will DEFINITELY be more precise about it.

Thank you!

It's a hard question to properly form, though. I've been working on or near surveys of various kinds for the last (checks watch) fifteen years. They're always horrible, it's just a matter of how horrible - so don't bother trying in vain to make one perfect.

In other news, can you even do a 4e project SAFELY without a new GSL? Even if it's for a patrons-only distribution, does it have to 'obey' the GSL?

I vote 3.5/OGL. I wouldn't go Pathfinder until the final version is released and the system settled.

Not to presume to speak for Wolfgang...

(or necessarily to the definition of "safety")...

I would point out that he already has a 4E Project, right now, close to completion. Wrath of the River King (and while you may have missed the design aspect, it might not be too late to just get the soon-to-be finished product).

So whether its safe or not, he's already done it. Though, he's said he felt comfortable about the decision at the time.

He keeps his default campaign setting, the Free City of Zobeck, quarantined from 4E, however.. for just the reason you might be implying. Zobeck is all things, 3.5.

Wrath of the River King was a sort of "points of light" style adventure, as I understand that phrase.

Nothing compels me to accept the GSL, if that is what you are asking. However, in theory a license provides some protection to licensees while providing benefits to the licensor.

In other words, both accepting the GSL and not accepting it carry risks. Given the tiny scale of the Open Design community, one could argue it's largely a fan-based publication.

It definitely has. We'll see if that momentum continues.

I wanted to raise a point of objection to splitting Pathfinder off from the 3.5 option.

I think this is a bad idea - Pathfinder is close enough to 3.5 that it should count in that regard. Moreover, it seems premature to have Pathfinder Beta be an option; that system will be outdated in less than a year when the final version comes out.

As it stands now, I think the Pathfinder votes should count towards 3.5; the difference is too thin for them to be separate categories.

Well, it's not as if an internet poll is going to have the final word here; it mostly to see what the relative level of interest is between the two. I agree that most Pathfinder fans would be almost as happy with an OGL release.

Ultimately, patrons who support the project will decide the issue with their donations. I'll open this project up for patrons in a couple weeks, when the current 4E project goes to the editor.
