Hej!

I've got a question for Wolfgang:

When I posted my review of the Midgard CS recently, I was contacted by one of the patrons of Castle Shadowcrag who goes by the nick Thanael. (Drop me a PM if you need the real name.)

He missed out on Halls of the Mountain King, a now closed project I was a patron of. Since I also have the gorgeous print of Halls, I proposed trading our pdf-copies - A great way for both of us to close gaps in our collection.

I wanted to ask whether you'd be okay with the proposed trade since I do not want to infringe on your artistic vision.

I'd be willing to delete my original pdf-copy after the trade, if you'd want me to, so the original file does not exist more often than it did before the trade.

Thanks in advance for the answer, however it might be.

Cheers,
Endzeitgeist

Well, the plan was to have a limited number of those Halls of the Mountain King and other produced.

I don't know that it was so much an artistic vision that they be a limited print run as that it seemed to be one way to make sure they were really the work of a small group.

Trading PDFs... Well, it gets into a lot of interesting questions about what the "limited edition" really meant. Since we're talking about supporters of two of the early projects, I guess I'm ok with it. The question leaves me a little nervous, frankly, because I was repeatedly shouted down by a vocal minority of patrons of Steam & Brass and Castle Shadowcrag when I suggested opening them up for patrons of later projects to pick up.

Yowch! I would hope that the patrons of both the projects I have been a part of (Journeys and Midgard Tales) would be completely open to ANY part of the final product to be fully available down the track to ANY customer. [EDIT - oh - perhaps you are merely referring to adding these into future patronages. My poin still stands here - I for one would be happy to have any part of JttW or Midgard Tales offered in patronages for future projects]

The idea of exclusivity seems kinda against "Open Design". I understand patronages of various levels bring their own reward, but once the design is done, the fruits of all that labor, IMHO, grow in value by dissemination, not diminish.
I guess other people's views differ, and I understand and have some empathy for that. But not much sympathy.

Yeah, I agree with you einherjar, but there was a very vocal minority on the first 2 or 3 projects who NEVER wanted to see those adventures offered anywhere else. It was never more than a small group, but since they were promised exclusivity on those projects, I was not willing to change the terms without 100% agreement.

Eventually, the projects shifted to offer public editions. The last closed one with a limited print and PDF distribution was Halls of the Mountain King, and that one did not promise complete exclusivity. In fact, the Dwarves of the Ironcrags Gazetteer was public, and so was the D&D Iron Gazetteer.

Thansk for the reply! I'm glad Strictly speaking we are, after all, not making them available to the general audience, but rather exchange them.

Cheers and all the best! (btw.: Today my Kobold Guide to Woldbuilding was in the mail! YEAH!)

Can't you just slightly alter the reprint to preserve the original (much like when another print run is done after the 1st edition?).

It doesn't sound like you can (based on how it was conveyed on the earlier post). That is kind of sad for people like me who happened to come later in the game, but have put a lot into things once they've become involved (at least monetarily, from my viewpoint, any rate, ...). On the flip side, I can understand if I was one that voted for things going a certain way not to have it changed....

(I really hate finding out about things I missed, after the fact... lol)

While the Steam and Brass adventure will never be reprinted, I believe (I don't have this one) most of the game info generated from it (Gearforged and the like) has been updated in the Zobeck Gazetteers. Most of the Empire of Ghoul mechanics are in the Ghoul Gazetteer too.

I missed out on Castle Shadowcrag though. Would love to see that one someday.

Although I would be a super patron of another below surface project detailing more of the Midgard Underdark. Wink
