Just curious if anyone has looked at the magic systems found in various novels/movies/comics etc wtih an eye towards the ease of converting them to the 4e or 3e rules?

I use the term magic system but any genre with special powers could work when answering this question.

The magic system in the Riftwar saga lends itself to this sort of treatment, though more for 4e than 3.5, truth be told. But that's not surprising, given that the setting originated as a home campaign, if I recall correctly.

PS - Ironically, the system in Harry Potter defies 4e a bit, as it makes flying one of the easiest things to do, and 4e, for purely meta-game reasons, makes that more difficult.

Hmm, interesting. I was actually wondering about Potter when asking the question. Wonder how hard it would be to rejig the 4e rule set to accomodate Hogwartsian physics.

I adapted Zelazny's magic system from the Merlin arc of the Amber Chronicles to 3.5. It worked out ok.

I'm still trying to figure out how to get 'The Magic Goes Away' to work.

I've been playing with the idea of ley line magic, of late. I'm also retooling the bard to be similar to the concept presented in the game "Loom". In addition, I am working on the concept of "sponsored" magic using witches and hags.

My problem is that the magic system is the first part I want to re-engineer when I sit down to D&D... It's not flexible enough, doesn't do enough cool stuff, and needs to be given a shot in the arm.

Ars Magica, on the other hand...

But I could hold you hostage on that all day.

"Sponsored" magic? I don't believe I've heard this term before. Could you elaborate a little?

Simply put, I took the concept of gods granting powers to their followers while receiving strength from their worship, applied the mechanics from the Fiend of Blasphemy prestige class from Fiend Folio, and reworked the idea to apply to hag coveys, covyns (epic-level coveys), and sponsored clutches (groups of half-hags, hagtouched, hag-blooded, or hagcast beings).

It was once postulated that sorcerers derived their abilities from an ancestry of dragons. I simply chose to revise that theory substituting witches and hags.

(There are a LOT of hags in my games) Wink

Sounds like a neat idea. Thanks for explaining it.
