I bought Defenders of Midgard a few months ago. For those who aren't familiar with it, this is a D&D 4E-compatible book, filled with Midgard-appropriate player options. It comes a long way toward allowing DMs to place their 4E game in the Midgard setting without having to do a ton of reskinning and other prep work (this book does a lot of that for them).
I had just one problem with the book, and someone suggested that I post it here, on the Kobold forums, to see if it might become a future Kobold Article. So here it goes!
The Schools of Magic that are presented (compatible with the 4E "Essentials" Mage from Heroes of the Fallen Lands) present features up to level 10. The book states in its introduction that it's intended for the heroic tier, but this omission leaves a Clockwork or Glyph Mage in a bit of a quandary—the Essentials Mage doesn't select a Paragon Path the way the core Wizard (Arcanist) does. The school of magic selected at character creation guides the Mage's development through both the heroic and paragon tiers. Something as simple as a sentence stating that the Mage should, at level 11, choose a Paragon Path would help. Clearly, if your character is using any of these options, you're already going outside of the "official" rules, so an Essentials Mage selecting a Paragon Path will allow the character to advance, even if his/her powers aren't very clockwork/glyph focused—perhaps some re-skinning of the spell fluff would help here. Even better would have been to expand these entries to include the 3 powers and 1 feature needed to fully define each school.
My hope is that those 3 powers and 1 feature for each the Clockwork and Glyph schools of magic would be included in a future Kobold article. |

Hey tbaker,
Sorry I didn't see this. With no active products I don't check the forums as much as I should.
I was the Lead Designer on Defenders of Midgard. Your suggestion was my assumption, Mages should just take a regular prestige class. The fact that the book didn't mention this is my bad, probably born out of the hopes that the project might get extended.
I checked my notes and apparently I wrote the Glyph Magic School and Richard Green wrote the Clockwork school. After a brief Twitter conversation we will probably finish the schools and submit them to the website as you suggested. |

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the reply. My campaign hasn't hit paragon tier yet, so it would be very exciting if these schools of magic ended up being rounded out in the future. Worse comes to worst, I'll have him choose a paragon path. Thank you once again for taking the time to reply. I'll keep my eye on the Kobold page for more great content! |
