Well, as long as I limit the next project to 99 patrons, I should be fine then, right?

Yes as long as I am in the 99. _________________ 3E+PF=KQ subscription IMHO |

Next one will be whatever edition patrons support with the commission.
I'm starting to think I should just skip the description and do a 3E/4E cage match for the commission. _________________ Wolfgang Baur

| An evil man (I am not he) would sell punches for the cage match at $1.00 apiece to let that determine edition. |

I'd be fine with watermarks as well.
I think that the way to do it might be more subtle. If someone is determined enough they can remove every known security measure. That is why I suggest an unknown security measure.
This might even work as a watermark.
Have a single mark that is different for each patron's pdf. Make it incredibly subtle, but discoverable if you know it is there.
Have the info stored in a file only Wolfgang and those he trusts (the editors) have seen, and only he has access to.
Then, pirates wouldn't know where in a document to correct, and would essentially be sending out their own name on the document.
Would it stop them? I don't know, but it's sure as hell be embarrasing and prevent them from being a patron again.

Not being familiar with the legalities of the 4E license, and since the crunch is a smallish portion of the word count...
Is there a possibility of writing either an edition neutral project with a separate file (web enhancements maybe?) of the crunch? Or maybe a project that isn't edition neutral but has the other edition as a separate file?
I know it was a nightmare for you during S&B to make the adventure scalable for three different playing levels... but you overcame that obstacle. There *HAS* to be a way to overcome this one.
I feel cruddy for not having joined Wrath, but I can't afford major patronage for more than one project at a time, and I won't be switching to 4E for the foreseeable future.
That being said, I would likely support a Zobeck project, even if it was 4E if one of the more talented Patrons I've seen post on OD committed to do a fan based conversion to 3.5 or Pathfinder.
But a non-Zobeck project that was 4E would probably mean the first gap in my OD Patronage (I don't count Wrath since I was a Zobeck Patron at the time). |

That would be a possibility. It would, of course, be a logistics nightmare, especially as the number of patrons and projects grows.
This would really come down to just how badly (i.e. how much work) Wolfgang wants to stop the piracy.
He would have to create a separate PDF for every single patron. Have separate downloads for every single patron. Have separate Lulu books for every single patron.
Unless, of course, you could somehow use the watermark software to place the secret marks. Being unfamiliar with the software I don't know how likely that is. |

We'll see how the editions shake out. I still have to push Wrath and KQ#8 out the door before starting this one. _________________ Wolfgang Baur

What I would do is use a program that hides info in the low bits of pictures. Get a patron to write a script that embeds this info into pictures. Then it would be really hard to scrub it from the file, without knowing where to look. A little annoying, but could easily be automated. I happen to be a programmer; I'd be willing to assist in such an endeavor.

Yeah, I was hoping/assuming that the watermark software could do that. I don't really know.
If not, it would be a logistics nightmare, I agree.... |

Wow...
Don't check the boards for a few days.. and golly. Terrible.
I'm fine with print only or watermarked PDF.
I'm just so sorry this happened at all. |

Usually a hidden watermark is still a watermark. The best security method is using both. The seen watermark to make know your customer that tihs electronic product is only for him, and the hidden to still know who is the owner of the copy if the owner tries to delete the seen one.
Having said this, I don't know how to put a watermark on a pdf. I only know the theory (since my thesis was about this technics).

This technic is called steganography and is used to create watermark indeed. But in watermarks this hidden script must resist image manipulations that could try to erase it from the pictures.

Well, I'll be talking to some folks about it offline and implementing something for the next project. _________________ Wolfgang Baur

About print copies only.
Here in Canada, the shipping costs are pretty steep... I love my PDFs for that reason and print what I need...
I do not share my OD copies btw. That is pretty wrong.
Let's watermark away or something.
But I do understand Wolfgang's dilemma here.
If I think of anything else, I'll let you know!

| It sucks that some low life made copies available. I guess, sadly, that piracy is the price of success. Clearly you need to take measures to protect your intellectually property and hard work. |
