Hey, has anyone else noticed a HUGE price hike in 3.5e sourcebooks and materials? Someone in my gaming group has been trying to buy a PHB and informed us yesterday that they now cost AT LEAST $50. some are selling for up to $160 on Amazon and Ebay. Any idea why this is happening? Something to do with WotC discontinuing the d20 license?

It probably has something to do with the fact that it's now out of print. There's no new copies entering the market, so supply/demand will determine the going price.

A quick search on Amazon shows the "limited edition" 3.5 PHB going for $47. That's the fancy one with the leather cover. The regular is listed at $44 for used and $50 for new, and not directly from Amazon.

I was also going to search Paizo, but their site appears to be down at the moment.

That was our initial supposition until we realized that you can buy 2nd edition books for next to nothing, and there's no more of them being produced either. Maybe it's just a temporary attempt to sell off extra stock at a markup...

The Pathfinder Beta is just $25, contains most of the 3E material you want from the PHB, and some DMG material to boot.

With better art.

Just sayin.

If you don't have an FLGS near you, but want one, I can probably locate a used one for you. I need an excuse to go to my FLGS. Just please pm or email me your price range and address. You might still like Pathfinder better. Smile

If the market for 3.5 stuff is that lucrative, maybe I should consider selling of my extensive 3.5 library.

I like having them on my shelf as keepsakes, but if I can sell 'em off for more than I paid for them, I'll use the extra money to buy me a consolation present.

Except for Stormwrack. The Hadozee were an awesome idea for a player race.

I'm pretty sure my friend checked the handful of bookstores that carry DnD products here in Portland. Although maybe there's some we don't know of. I wasn't too concerned, but now another person in our group is looking for a handbook too.

How different is the Pathfinder Beta on mechanics, feats, character classes, and spells? I think that for equipment and skills we could share books, but if someone wanted to make a new character or learn about combat maneuvers or spells it'd be nice for them to have their own book. If Pathfinder has the same material then that would definitely work.

Can't you download that for free? I'll go check it out.

And yeah, if anyone finds a cheap copy (under $30) pick it up and I'll totally pay shipping.

I can check some of the used bookstores around town. Gimme a few days and I'll see what I can shake out.

You can also grab a copy of Sovelior Sage's HTML version of the SRD still. http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage.zip

And d20srd.org is still up and running.

Its not the PHB but all of the mechanics are in there and its much easier to search and reference.

While I am not an expert, I have read enough of the posts at Paizo that I am convinced that Pathfinder is different enough to be considered a whole separate game. I would say that there are more differences than for example D&D 3.0 to 3.5.

I just don't see players being able to bring their 3.5 Players handbook or the Pathfinder beta. You would need to choose one or the other and use that or have problems.

If you don't mind the change, and want a system that many say is the spirit of 3.5, then you might want to give pathfinder a try. I think you are going to see support for this for a long while yet. Keep in mind that these rules are still in development. I say that because some groups ** love *** to try new rules, others just want to cut to the chase and use the final rules (that would be me).

If you want to stick with 3.5 (this is me), then take a look at some of the suggestions in the other posts. Because of the OGL, a lot of the rules were redone in other forms. For example, almost all of the rules I have in an MS word format. You may also want to try to find the boxed player's kit. This has a non hard cover version of the Player's Handbook (I always use this, my hard cover has just sat on my shelf for years). These may still be out there and cheap, but I have not done a check for them in a while.

Cheers

I just picked up Complete Psionics for $6 and Dragon Magic for $7.50 from eBay. You can find cheap books there.
I was outbid on a 3.5 DM Guide and PHB which went for $11.50 and 14.50.
I usually make sure that I don't bid any hugher than what I could get them from amazon.com used. (I include shipping in my total because some eBay sellers charge ridiculous shipping charges.)

I think ebay is the only place I've seen reasonable prices for these things lately. checked out Powells, biggest bookstore on the west-coast, and there's were $50, amazon's lowest was $45, even the LGS was selling used copies for $40-$50. Guess I'll just lurk out on ebay.

Fray,
You paid $6 and $7.50 with shipping? I have yet to buy anything from e-bay, and one reason is because for the things I have seen, by the time I add in the shipping, it's not such a great deal anymore.

But if you are getting things that cheap, I may have to check it out. Also, if this is not the total cost, can you tell me what the total was?

Thanks

No that was without shipping.
But when I bid I took the shipping costs into account so on amazon shipping is ~$4 and on eBay $4-6.
I think Complete Psionic was $11 and Dragon Magic was $7.50 plus shipping but I won 3 other EXALTED books and had combined shipping, so shipping was $3.50.

Powells has some crazy prices sometimes. Most of the time they are on the high end. I used to get their weekly emails about what they go to track what is going through them to see the trends.

Thanks, I suspected that. But even with the shipping that's still a good price. I have to think about this. I used to order from a place called game outfitter. They had great prices. The problem was, about every 3rd order they would make a mistake or have a problem and I got to the point where it just did not seem worth the savings.

E-bay makes me feel that I will have to worry about the same thing. I may have to poke around a little and see if the price savings is worth the risk.

Thanks for the info.
