Wolfgang Baur wrote the Dungeon Adventure "Ship of Night" in Dungeon #20. It is most definitely set in the Realms and also includes references to a drow city Angrimm as well as "the Great Cloaker Rift".
He also wrote "Kingdom of the Ghouls" in Dungeon #70 that was set in the underdark of GH. In this adventure a drow city is wiped out (has reently been wiped out) and the Cloaker Rift and Angrimm (now a ruined dwarven city) both appear.
Since this obviously isn't a coincidence my thought is that "Kingdom of the Ghouls" was set in the Realms but destroyed Menzoberranzan and so he was told to change it to GH, since no one at TSR/WotC was willing to destroy such an FR icon (even though Dungeon is not canon and they've had modules therein that destroyed other FR cities, such as Llorkh).
Anyone know the true history behind this? Can I get a response from Wolfgang Baur himself and find out? I'd be interested in what other development he had for the underdark as he wrote two of the best underdark modules around.
Finally, is Empire of the Ghouls a continuation of Kingdom of the Ghouls?

I can't comment about the whys of the Dungeon articles. I do think that if you wanted to run an adventure where the characters delve deeply to infiltrate Menzoberranzen and instead find it overrun by ghouls, that would be pretty awesome.
Empire of Ghouls is a continuation and expansion of the ideas in Kingdom of Ghouls, but is not a direct sequel. You certainly could tie them together relatively easily if you wished. It is set in the Zobeck world, but it really isn't hard to place it under any world that you wish. It is one of the best underdark supplements I've ever seen, and details a number of locations both inside and on the borders of the Ghoul Empire. I particularly like the Cloaker and Aboleth cities. Of course, as a patron project that is no longer available, it may be difficult to acquire a copy of. There have been a few recent ebay auctions, so there may be some hope in finding a willing seller. |

In my mind, the underdark is a campaign setting, and I love it more than either the Realms or Greyhawk.
So, yes, all three of the "Ghoul Trilogy" adventures are set in the same underdark. What happens on the surface is mostly irrelevant, and the fact that "Ship" was set in FR and "Kingdom" was set in GH is a coincidence. They're both really set in Zobeck, as far as I'm concerned.
No one at TSR or WotC forced me to set the adventures in either place. The setting-specific material in them is (IIRC) limited to the names of cities and geographic features in the adventure backstory. Yes, destroying a drow city was a lot of fun; working at TSR and WotC, you tend to burn out on drow mania after a while.
I hope that answers the question.
Of more current interest, the derro are back in Halls of the Mountain King. Just saying. _________________ Wolfgang Baur
