I was wondering what tools folks use for formatting and creating publishable documents when they're writing adventures or other gaming articles? I've been thinking about writing up some of my homebrew adventures as PDF's, to distribute to my friends and possibly submit to KQ etc., but have no experience with PDF publishing. Any suggestions as to good software to use? I've heard the Adobe Indesign program is pretty good, but it's expensive...

You don't need InDesign to create a PDF; that's overkill.

Word will create a PDF from the Save menu. And Adobe Acrobat will let you do more formatting/bookmarking etc.

Exactly. Programs like InDesign and Quark are professional level page layout applications used for designing and laying out awesome looking things like Kobold Quarterly or the new Pathfinder RPG book.

If you are mainly dealing with formatted text, a couple images and a basic design, Word is a fine way to go.

If you really decide you want an actual page layout application but don't want to spend much, there are some shareware and inexpensive ones out there. They certainly will not rival Quark or InDesign but you could get your feet wet ...

Also I think you could do this through lulu.com also.
(Haven't tried it my self yet...)
Take your text file and upload it to lulu. Make a pdf. (Haven't tried it yet.) Send out link to download.
