| Probably Forgotten Realms, but Ravenloft is close behind. |

| Diamond Throne (Arcana Evolved). Although the "implied setting" for the Open Design project is growing on me a lot between Zobeck, the AN anthology, and the oblique reference to Trollheim in the Flying Cities of Sikkal article in KQ#3. |

Just wondering, is there a difference between Arcana Evolved and Unearthed Arcana? _________________

Unearthed Arcana is a book produced by WotC that provides a ton of variant rules.
Arcana Evolved is a product from Monte Cook. Exactly what's in it I don't know, because I don't have it. _________________ John Ling

Arcana Evolved is a whole different take on D&D/d20 that's crazy different. None of the races, classes, spells, etc. carry over.
It's interesting. I'm playing in a game in the setting. I really like the story although the setting itself has turned me off pretty bad.
I'm firmly in the Forgotten Realms camp. I love it. It's been a love of mine for decades now (okay, that might be an exaggeration, but it's a very slight exaggeration). _________________ Jeff Greiner...

It's best described as an alternate players handbook. Six new races, twelve new classes, revised spells, and a lot, lot more. Fellow who went to a couple of my convention games described it as "D&D on steroids." Which isn't true especially compared to results from the Complete Munchkin series, but it does get the point across that it's a high energy book.
I too have enjoyed Forgotten Realms. Less so since others got into the setting than just Ed Greenwood. I also have a soft spot for Greyhawk, my first campaign setting. Not to mention Ptolus, but that's just a city, and City of Brass (same point), and oh, a whole helluva lot of other stuff. |

You gotta get a copy, just for insight into class and race design. I've learned a lot from just deconstructing the classes and seeing how they were built. More so than just about any product, you get the sense of the nuts and bolts of the d20 system, the foundation of it, so to speak.
For example, the idea that class progression via levels need not be a linear thing, too, is very interesting. I know you've jumped on the idea of substitution levels in the past, so it's an area of interest.
Well, I'm assuming that gem of an idea was originally processed in the early design phase of 3E, because both the Andy Collins driven products and the Monte Cook stuff all have differing takes on it. Seeing the differences and the similarities is interesting, to say the least.
Cook does a lot of stuff with templates -- he doesn't always call them that, but that's what they are. And I'm just not talking about layovers for monster builds. Some of the "classes" are actually just templates, a sort of multiclassing, without the back'n'forth. It's similar to d20 Modern's take on Advanced Classes.
Anyway, that's just a taste. I'd recommend you picking it up. _________________ Thanks for all the little people -- my collection of miniatures -- that made me the DM I am today. |

I'm an old fart -- so my favorite D&D setting is Greyhawk.
However, I'll jump into Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time at the drop of that hat. That is a great setting.
And I'm developing a warm spot for Eberron. I understand the focus is "fantasy noir," but it's got it's own brand of steampunk/Victoriana/clockworks that I find interesting. Anyway, it's the aspect of the game I like. _________________ Thanks for all the little people -- my collection of miniatures -- that made me the DM I am today. |

| Right now, I'd have to say my favorite setting is Eberron, although my gaming group had to push me into it. I have always wanted to run a Dragonlance game, but never had enough interest amongst my players. I like the way that Golarion is developing and I may start running my games there. |
