Anyone know of a magic item in 3.5DMG or PFRPG that grants a feat with use?
Or an item that grants blindsense/blindsight?
Thanks |

For anybody else who's curious about an answer, the dark blue rhomboid ioun stone grants Alertness. In addition, while it's not open content specifically, WotC's Arms and Equipment Guide has formulas on how to determine the price of an item that grants a feat. It's been a while since I looked, but as I recall every item I've ever checked follows the formula. (which is 10K plus some amount per pre-req; I don't recall the amount, but I do remember that the amount went up or down depending on if you had to have the pre-req or not to use the item.)
Off the top of my head, I don't know one that grants blindsense or blindsight. _________________ John Ling

Thanks! As I continued to do the research (I also found the ion stone... and the gloves of arrow snaring) the item concept morphed a little. |

| The gloves kinda skew the example. I remember a lengthy discussion with SKR about how different feats have different values. Ones that add+2 to a skill check or something are worth more like 5000 gp. |

If it only adds +2 to a skill, then it's not replicating a feat. Even if you alter your example to give +2 to two skills (like the ioun stone and the Alertness feat), there's still a difference. Granting the actual feat stacks with everything else; the bonus from Alertness (and Stealthy and Skill Focus and...) is untyped. If I have the ioun stone, I get a +2 to Spot; if I then put on a pair of eyes of the eagle I get another +5 to Spot. The two bonuses stack because the ioun stone grants an untyped bonus while eyes of the eagle grants a competence bonus.
That's the real value of using a magic item to grant a feat. There's a HUGE amount of feats out there, and characters only have so many feat slots (in 3.5, it's 7 for non-humans, 8 for humans - excluding class bonus feats). If I can pay a little bit of gold for an item that grants me a feat, that's a good deal. If you reduced the cost of the ioun stone down to 5K, it'd be too cheap.
edit: Bah. I hate when I forget to finish my thought...
As for the gloves of arrow snaring, I'm not so sure they skew the price. If somebody takes the feat, they can use the ability once per round. If somebody puts on a pair of the gloves, they can (for a cost of 4K) use the ability twice per day.
In addition, there's a pretty big opportunity cost associated, since the glove slot has several highly-sought after items, such as gloves of Dex and gauntlets of ogre power. You could pay to stack the items, but most groups I've seen don't bother getting into the rules for that.
Anyway, I think the gloves of arrow snaring are pretty expensive, considering what they do. _________________ John Ling
