I am ridiculously pleased with how this turned out: the first chance I've had to write an intro/Beginner Box adventure in a long time, and the results are (to my mind at least) at least as much fun as The Gryphon's Legacy and Doom of Daggerdale.
Available now at Paizo and DriveThru.

| Good stuff, I like the mapping, and the reaction chart for what the kobolds and trollkin do. A good adventure! |

I like it Wolfgang. Of course, as an oldskool grognard I see shades of UK2 The Sentinel in the reimagined trollkin lair. Love the guard-crab. It's a tight adventure that works off a simple premise with plenty of hooks and room for expansion and exploration. The dhampir bandit/treasure hunter was an especially nice little touch.
One small thing - I really like the art for the trollkin, especially the final artwork in the racial writeup. However the written description makes them seem much more bestial in appearance. There are enough bestial koboldy looking things - I much prefer the illustrated human with flat nose bestial ears version. Similar to Dark Trolls from (again, oldskool) Runequest. _________________ einherjar/Oceanshieldwolf/Morgan Boehringer

Glad you like it! Alas I don't think I ever owned The Sentinel, but some monster tropes are fairly common (I was thinking more Brüder Grimm).
The UK series was tough to find in the States, or at least, I only found UK4 When a Star Falls, which I rather loved. Any comparison to that series is entirely welcome: I think Graeme Davis wrote a big whack of them.
On the trollkin art: I think the artist was following the right direction, but the editor may have pushed things the other way. Got our art/text wires crossed. The trollkin in the MCS are human with hints of bestial trollishness. _________________ Wolfgang Baur

*Definitely pick up UK4 The Sentinel /UK5 The Gauntlet if Wizards re-release them as PDFs - the best two-part adventure ever to my mind. Great use of iconic monsters and the best finale ever for 3-6 level characters involving a multi-gated prison, a two headed troll, an intelligent gauntlet and an imprisoned fire giant princess and her father besieging the keep where it all happens with his attendant hobgoblin army.
*Yep, trollkin art fantastic, trollkin descriptive text bad.
BTW: Wolfgang - any chance of PF-ing the Gryphon's Legacy? What's the story with that anyway? Why did that imprint fold ?(was it Gaslight? can't remember right now). |

It was Gaslight Press! The brothers who ran it moved on to work at XBox and on casual games for mobile.
The rights might be available, and it even has a place in Midgard canon (this is the first appearance of the Ghost Knights of Morgau at my home table, though they were renamed in Gryphon's Legacy).
Huh. I wonder if they still have the files somewhere... _________________ Wolfgang Baur

Hi! I'm just starting a campaign in Midgard and am wanting to run The Raven's Call as my starting adventure. My question is, where is this supposed to be located in the world?
I'm sure I'm missing something but I can't find its location to save me.
Thanks in advance!

It is deliberately left vague so that you can place it wherever you want to run your campaign. The best places for it though are anywhere along the Nieder Strait, so Krakova, Vidim, the Northlands, bits of the Grand Duchy.
I ran it for some as a village on a largely empty Krakovan shore. Then they can go south to Zobeck, east to the gnomes, or west to the grand duchy, or north to the wild Northlands for their next adventure. _________________ Wolfgang Baur

Hi Wolfgang,
Just wanted to let you know that I reviewed The Raven's Call at DriveThruRPG:

I found a copy of The Gryphon's Legacy for $1.50 and picked it up. I'd be interested in an updated version (PDF format) if such a thing were ever to become available. |

Thank you for the review, tbaker!
I'm happy to see that it worked for 13th Age, and I'm sure you will get someone asking about the conversion notes. _________________ Wolfgang Baur

Since The Gryphon's Legacy was mentioned in this thread, I thought someone might be interested in my review of the adventure on Amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.com/review/R1VKA7M0AN6MPV/?ASIN=0971352607&nodeID=283155
I ended up running it for 13th Age rather than 3rd Edition D&D, which worked beautifully. The players already felt like their characters were connected to the world via backgrounds, icons, and uniques, but giving them a few dozen settlers to worry about really upped the ante.
Since I'd already run The Raven's Call, the settlers in The Gryphon's Legacy were the survivors from the village of Nargenstal (the setting of The Raven's Call). Although the PCs had saved many lives in Nargenstal, the reavers had left with the village's food stores. Plus, the collateral damage to the structures in the village was steep. Thus, the relocation of the villagers fit nicely based on the players' own actions, and I continued to use the same NPCs that the party had formed a relationship with. It's much more tragic if a dire badger drags Grandmother Hildigunn into their den as a snack than it is if "nameless settler 5" is taken.
The heroic play-style of 13th Age, even at low levels, was perfect for this adventure, in my opinion. I've never played 3.x/Pathfinder, but it's my understanding that low-level characters are closer to 2nd Edition D&D than they are to 4th Edition (two of my reference points). Running this with a small group, it worked well at 2nd level for 13th Age.

Mr. Baur, do you know if any other Sun & Scale products were ever published? I visited their web site, where The Valdan Wilds and The Zombie Woods are mentioned (and both are referenced in The Gryphon's Legacy). I even found a review of The Zombie Woods, so it appears that it was written, but I can't find a copy anywhere. I'm wondering if it was ever published.
I'd be interested in getting my hands on more of the setting's materials if it exists. |
