Just wondering how people use maps, 3D terrain, minis, etc. for their games.
I use a combination of all of the above depending on the adventure I am running.
I use Hirst Arts terrain, Fat Dragon paper terrain and Tiles, Scratch-built stuff, printed maps, hand drawn maps, minis and sometimes nothing at all. |

Mini's and mats for me...with, of course, the handy dandy overhead marker of many colors.
My big trouble is that I'm not into painting minis. But I'm also not a DDM player. So I love the prepainted plastic minis...I hate the randomized box. I'm running an adventure with an army of lizardfolk. Why can I not go out and buy a box of prepainted plastic lizardfolk?!?
Wolfgang, you're a man of might and power. Make this happen. I demand it.

I use a flip-mat and a chessex battle mat as a surface. both came in really handy recently, as I ran a multi-level area that would open holes randomly into the floor below it.
For miniatures I use little class counters. I have a wide selection of colors (including opaque white). They are great for differentiating between different monsters, PCs. Another bonus is you can write on them with wet erase markers.
I also have a suite of wet and dry erase markers. |

You should check with some of the local DDM players. If they are like me you end up with a ton of extras that are common and uncommon that they might not mind parting with. |

Or, you could make things a lot simpler by putting some ranks into Sleight of Hand...

Mats and counters for me, though occasionally I use purchased or homemade tiles. Since it's impossible to find just the right minis most of the time, I've taken to making my own counters by photoshopping illustrations and printing them onto sticker paper which I apply to architect's foamboard. The process yields decent-looking counters that are easier pick up and more durable than other paper counters. They're much cheaper than minis, and I can make an endless supply with any picture I want. It doesn't take long to make them, either.

I used to be a minis freak, but got away from maps and counters in recent years. I've found that it's easier to focus on action when people are talking about their characters or I'm talking about the monsters.
So, for fights against 1 or 2 foes, we skip the figures. That only works up to a point. For bigger brawls, it's time to bring out the minis.
And I second the motion for DDM minis. Great way to get a horde of kobolds.

Well, yes, against a single monster I don't always use them, either. I do stick with the mat, though, since I feel it helps the players understand their surroundings a big better.

| My campaign is strickly PBEM right now. We do not use maps and miniatures. I have a whack of Ed Bourelle's dungeon tiles and used them frequently when we played around the table. |

Yeah one or two monsters, depend on what kind of course, We may or may not use a map, but always for big battles.
Reaper makes pre-painted minis that you can get for your RPG games and you can see what you are buying.

| Minis, Mat and Dungeon Tiles (very good value). Though the minis are coming fewer and fewer as I get only the ones I need not whole cases or sets. |

I used to make my own battlemaps out of crayon, then I printed some out to scale (from the Dungeon magazine pdfs), but now mainly I use my dry-erase marker footmap or tiles (Dungeon tiles and GameMastery tiles).
I used to love games that didn't use minis. I just don't see how you can do tactical combat (which is what 3.5 is all about) WITHOUT minis. So, I guess over time I've gone in the opposite direction of Wolfgang.
