Transmutation: More New Spells

Circe Invidiosa by John William Waterhouse
According to the rules, polymorph effects don’t stack. Would-be transmuters need to carefully select a diverse array of transmutation powers for those instances when the only remaining foe has already been transformed into some harmless form. Several transmutation spells also create effects or conditions that make their targets more attractive candidates for an ally’s attacks. This leaderlike quality of the transmuter should not be overlooked and can be used to help control the battlefield.

The new transmutation spells below build on the themes and options seen in an earlier article.

Brittle Bones     Wizard Attack 3
The bones in your target weaken, making them more prone to damage.
Encounter * Arcane, Implement, Necrotic, Transmutation
Standard Action     Area burst 2 in 10
Target: Each creature in the burst
Attack: Intelligence vs. Fortitude
Hit: 1d10 + Intelligence modifier necrotic damage.
Effect: The next time the target takes damage before the start of your next turn, it takes additional damage equal to your Intelligence modifier.

Reduce Person     Wizard Attack 5
You shrink your foe, making its attacks less painful and its steps smaller.
Daily * Arcane, Implement, Polymorph, Transmutation
Standard Action     Ranged 10
Target: One creature
Attack: Intelligence vs. Fortitude
Hit: The target is weakened, slowed, and made one size category smaller until the end of your next turn.
Sustain Minor: The effects on the target persist until the end of your next turn.

Titanic Might     Wizard Utility 6
You fill an ally with the powerful essence of a mighty giant, lending strength to his or her attacks.
Daily * Arcane, Polymorph, Transmutation
Standard Action     Ranged 10
Target: One ally
Effect: The target gains a +3 bonus to damage rolls until the end of the encounter and can push any creature he or she hits with a melee basic attack 1 square.

Ghoul Touch     Wizard Attack 7
Your hand takes on a ghoulish appearance and stench, allowing you to paralyze your enemies.
Encounter * Arcane, Implement, Poison, Polymorph, Transmutation
Standard Action     Melee 1
Target: One creature
Attack: Intelligence vs. Reflex
Hit: 3d4 + Intelligence modifier damage, and the target is immobilized until the start of your next turn.
Effect: Until the end of your next turn, any creature that starts it turn adjacent to you takes poison damage equal to your intelligence modifier.

Amorphous Form     Wizard Attack 9
Your foes become a puddle of slippery goo on the floor.
Daily * Arcane, Implement, Polymorph, Transmutation, Zone
Standard Action     Area burst 1 in 10
Target: Each creature in the burst
Attack: Intelligence vs. Fortitude
Hit: The target is turned to ooze (save ends). As long as at least one target is affected by this power, the ooze creates a zone that fills the area of the burst regardless of the number of enemies affected and it remains until the last creature subject to this power succeeds at its saving throw. Any creature entering the area must make a hard DC Acrobatics check or end its movement and fall prone.
Aftereffect: 2d6 + Intelligence modifier damage.
Miss: You slide the target 2 squares.

Polymorph Any Object     Wizard Utility 10
You cause a nearby object to become whatever tool you currently need.
Encounter * Arcane, Polymorph, Transmutation
Minor Action     Ranged 10
Target: One unattended object of Medium size or smaller.
Effect: You transform the target into any nonmagic object of similar size. This effect lasts until the end of the encounter or for a total of 5 minutes.

Crushing Bloat     Wizard Attack 13
You cause your enemies to bloat with bizarre growths, crushing them with their own weight.
Encounter * Arcane, Implement, Polymorph, Transmutation
Standard Action     Area burst 2 in 20
Target: Each enemy in the burst
Attack: Intelligence vs. Fortitude
Hit: 3d6 + Intelligence modifier damage, and the target is slowed until the end of its next turn.
Miss: The target is slowed until the end of its next turn.

Wow! Fantastic article. I love the reasoning and the “leaderlike” role advice. Sure it’s a 4e role thing, but I think it applies to 3.5/PF as well.

I really like the abilities too –
Brittle Bones is great flavor with a simple and effective mechanic.
Ghoul Touch tickles my undead bone, but I’m biased.
Amorphous Form – I can’t decide which I like more: “Your foes become a puddle of slippery goo” or “The target is turned to ooze”. ‘Nuff said!
I *love* Titanic Might. Makes me remember those bits I actually love about 4e. For that, you have my thanks. Well done David.
