He carried a plague but was not harmed by it (like Typhoid Mary). Thus, as he ran from town to town, he spread the seeds of an epidemic. Finally prevelent enough to be common knowledge the need to spread warning of it fell to the towns messenger boy, Vaszi. So he brought it and the news of it all the way home. Everyone died. If the poor boy ever stops running he may discover that the illness follows him wherever he goes. He may realise that the cart is not the cause, just the child of his own folly.
