As a coward in an Ebberon game I must also suggest "Bluff" as a tool. Not so much to save one's skin but to explain the reason why the coward fled or dropped into the shadows to avoid combat (2 of my own personal favorite tactics to saving myself!) When the rest of the party wants to know why the coward was not helping in an encounter a nice lie can help explain the cowardice. "Well I wanted to help you against the Bugbears but I noticed something moving up from behind the party. It was a small group of goblins that I routed to so as not to flank us in combat!"
