My first GenCon experience ended up having almost no actual gaming – I was working a booth for one of the entertaining groups – but it did put me smack in the middle of the exhibit hall all weekend.

Highlights included: getting Richard Hatch to bellydance with me (I have photographic evidence of this), wearing a shirt with the symbol from the Greatest American Hero’s suit on it and finding that William Katt was occupying the booth directly behind mine, and spending my free time wandering around the exhibit hall, trying to figure out how many pieces of my liver I would have to sell to buy all the games I liked. (;

My first Gen Con will always be the best Gen Con ever in my eyes. I had been dumped by someone I thought I would end up married to. I knew he would be moving out while I was gone. I tried to not go and my friend whom I was going with wouldn’t let me back out.
As soon as I stepped in the doors of the main gaming room, my jaw dropped. It was geek heaven! I didn’t think about my woes or my heartbreak for the next days!

Fun contest and amusing story.

Of course, you realize that accepting that product without its requisite box has branded you a TRAITOR in the eyes of our Almighty Computer and your clone series must be eliminated for the good of society.

PS: My first GenCon, despite having grown up in Kenosha, wasn’t until 1990 when I was on staff at TSR. Don’t think I have any really interesting stories of that show…though the 3 days preceding the show with my first meeting with Ed Greenwood might have a tale or two…

Too long since I’ve been to GenCon – my first featured no sleep, a lot of time spent gawking at gamer celebrities and playing some wacky games, and some L5R grinding (where I won the WB award). Hopefully next year will mark the return of a Canadian geek. I would even walk up to Mr WB with a smile on my face.
