It’s a good example of a failure mode that doesn’t bring the game to a halt.

The only advice I have is to make the challenges simple and abstract. Use them as vessels for narration and improvisation. Specific milestones in a challenge are often easily circumvented, requiring improvisation from the DM anyway.
