The light shines on its surface, reflecting your face like a beautiful yet fractured mirror. Beams refract through its structure, causing it to seem to glow in your grasp, and it possesses an unexpected weight. Even in a gem of this size, the heft of the ruby is unbelievable.”

The Eye of Fate is an impressive find with a suitably impressive history. First mentioned some thousand years ago, the eye was discovered by a now nameless sorcerer. He claimed it as his source of power, and used it to establish one of the first empires in the region. His most impressive feat was to slay a dragon that threatened his rule. The magician’s personal refuge was destroyed by siege engines immediately after his death, and his name erased from history in a bold move by Arcus IV, the noble who next assumed power.

Throughout history, whenever a powerful individual rose to great heights, and later fell to treachery or arrogance, it has been believed to be the work of the eye. Less than a hundred years ago, General Dannelan claimed that he had found the eye shortly before he turned on his ruler and seized control of the country. In twelve years, the new king had quelled all resistance and expanded the borders—an impressive feat. His wife, however, poisoned him and left with his adjunct advisor. The eye fell into obscurity at this point, but rumors say an insular noble found it and hid it away, unused.

The eye has three distinct powers:

1. It increases the efficacy of casting spells, providing a +2 bonus to the Magic test, as well as a +2 bonus to Spellpower. To gain these bonuses, the Mage must hold it in at least one hand when casting a spell.

2. It also increases the reputation and social power of the bearer. This second power is more subtle, letting the bearer re-roll his or her dragon die in all social interactions for the purpose of determining influence (not stunt points). However, the second result must be kept.

3. The ruby binds fate to the ambitions of the bearer, altering events so that the owner’s most ambitious desires might come to pass. A kind ear here, a more fortuitous outcome on the battlefield there—the gem is extremely subtle and thus there are no rules for this. The Game Master can choose to manifest this in game terms, or not.

The main drawback of the eye is that it is also appears to warp fate to find a new master. Enemies and even friends have been tempted to steal or murder for it. All attempts to hide that the bearer owns the eye are fruitless, since it shifts fate to become known in a rumor or surprise presentation. Just as it changes events to bring the bearer’s ambitions to fruition, it inspires others to do whatever is necessary to acquire the eye. It takes a truly impressive individual to find, use, and keep the Eye of Fate. The only way to safely own it is to lock it away, unused. However, the eye sometimes shifts events to be discovered again, even when hidden and forgotten by all but history itself.

Perhaps this last part is how it comes to light in your campaign?

According to lore about this tome, fueled by rage and blood lust, the angels’ rebellion brought Heaven to the brink of a massive devil invasion. The rebellion failed, and all of the angels who partook or supported the rebellion were brought before the gods and judged. The leader of the rebellion was judged first. He was chained to the top of a thin, crumbling pillar anchored in the layered depths of Hell. After angering the higher powers with hateful statements about the gods being nothing but self-centered slavers, he was sentenced to be forever bound to the codex, which bore the names of those fallen angels that almost drove the upper planes to ruin those many eons ago. He was charged with ensuring the book would remain unharmed for all of eternity. Although many of the angels named in the codex have met with violent or gruesome ends in their new home, lore about the book states that many forcefully carved their own niche in Hell and became the progenitors of a species of devil known today as erinyes.

The Liber Libri Delapsus Angelus, or Codex of Fallen Angels, is a book that was created to document the true names of all angels who were banished from Heaven during the Great Revolt.

Originally housed in one of the largest libraries of Heaven, this book has been the center of many plots and, as a result, has been missing for centuries. This large codex is bound in mithril and sports a white cover labeled “Liber Libri Delapsus Angelus.” Upon opening the codex, the reader sees that the first page is scribed in golden ink that reads like a sentencing. It states that the names contained in this codex are forever barred from reentry into Heaven unless specifically pardoned by a god that resides in one of the upper planes, or their representatives. What follows are 666 pages filled with 3 columns of names written in blood. It is believed by some (particularly older erinyes) that the destruction of this codex would result in their salvation and allow them reentry into Heaven along with their decedents. Others believe that this would also allow Hell’s legions to have a way into Heaven and use the erinyes as a spearhead, a task for which the erinyes would be perfectly suited.

The Codex of Fallen Angels has a number of protections in place to help ensure that it does not fall into the wrong hands. It is immune to spells and impervious to damage. The book grants its bearer a number of spell-like abilities. The bearer always has a resist energy spell active and the energy resisted can be of any element chosen by the bearer (standard action to change the type of element). The book grants the bearer a permanent protection from evil spell. When carried in the off-hand, the book bestows the bearer with both the holy and the bane (devil) enhancements. In addition to weapons, these enhancements are also applied to any ranged, unarmed strikes, or natural attacks if applicable. If the book itself is used as a weapon, it acts as a magical (+1), improvised, two-handed weapon that deals d4 damage and has double strength holy (in other words, +4d6 damage vs. evil creatures struck by the weapon and it bestows 2 negative levels to those of evil alignment handling the codex) and bane (devil) enchantments. By reading off the names, the bearer can summon an advanced erinyes to do his or her bidding (as the summon monster VII spell). This uses a standard action and summons an erinyes with the advanced template; the duration is a total of 25 rounds per day and does not need to be consecutive. Erinyes summoned this way are compelled to act as commanded but also attempt to discern the codex’s location. The last feature of the codex is the “guardian” that is bound to it pages. This ancient being appears as an illustrated angel that can move between the pages as he desires, although he cannot manifest physically outside the book. Eons of imprisonment have resulted in near-complete insanity. He does not remember his name, and although he is magically compelled to always protect the book from fell hands, he is always trying to escape. He can communicate through dreams and telepathically to those around the book at will. The extent of his powers is not known. He is an ever present and potentially dangerous component of the codex.

Destruction
The Codex of Fallen Angels was designed to be destroyed after obtaining written consent from a willing presiding angel in the Supreme Courtroom of Heaven. Individuals can be removed from the list with approval as above depending on the individual devil’s history and atonement. It is theorized that other methods of destruction might exist.

Aura strong conjuration and transmutation; CL 20th
Slot none; Weight 12 lbs.

Description
The artifact is a hulking, fist-shaped lump of mechanical adamantine components. The wearer is considered armed with a metal gauntlet. Because the fist is awkwardly oversized, the wielder has a –2 penalty to attack rolls. However, devotees of Danermind (see below) who can channel divine energy discover they can use it as easily as their own fists. Monks who dedicate themselves to the god receive similar grace.

The fist is a +4 adamantine holy construct bane gauntlet. It bypasses all hardness and has a base damage of 1d10 (x3). It grants the wearer a +4 divine bonus to Strength and Constitution. It provides an additional +5 divine bonus to break attempts against objects and to CMB attempts to sunder. The fist is particularly effective at punching through barriers—even magical ones. A magical barrier (such as wall of force) struck by the fist is affected as if by greater dispel (CL 20). Lastly, the wearer of the fist can assume elemental body (earth) II 1/day for 20 minutes and can use the fist to attack while transformed.

Lore
Knowledge (history)
DC 18: Long ago, Danermind, a mighty god of battle, fought an epic duel with a giant adamantine construct known as the Nine-Limbed Juggernaut. Danermind’s Fist is a relic of this battle.

DC 23: Unable to damage it with his weapon, Danermind punched the metal monster and tore a large chunk from it. His fist now encased in adamantine, he proceeded to pound the mechanical monstrosity to scrap.

DC 28: After the battle, he gave the fist to a favorite worshiper, Darunnar the Fearless. Darunnar used it to defeat the mighty artificer Kel-Kwoneen and his army of clockwork dragons in the battle of Barren Tor. Since then it has passed from hero to hero and in and out of history—often returning to the hands of Danermind’s most zealous followers. It is the nemesis of evil constructs and deals handily with barriers.

Knowledge (religion)
DC 18: Danermind is the god of battle and patron of elemental earth. Danermind’s Fist is one of his sacred relics and a mighty weapon.

DC 25: In the right hands, there is almost nothing it cannot damage, and evil constructs are particularly vulnerable to its power. Only devout followers of the god can wield the fist with ease.

DC 28: The wielder of Danermind’s Fist can punch through magical barriers and can also temporarily assume the rocky form of the god to wreak havoc.

Destruction
Danermind’s Fist can be destroyed only by casting it into the intense heat of the Forge of the Elder Smiths, a gigantic smelting complex in the heart of an active volcano. It was there the Nine-Limbed Juggernaut was constructed so long ago. Rumors claim, ageless titanic cyclopses still live and labor in the mountain.
