Currently, I have a 4E skunk works project underway, called Wrath of the River King. If you want to support it, great, but please be aware that it is very speculative (since the license is not available yet). Also, given what I've heard about the GSL so far, the resulting adventure cannot be released until October at the earliest.

Half the fun, of course, will be figuring out what works, and watching the process of me flailing about with the 4E ruleset to make it work for the adventure.

Anyway, what's "River King" about? I have a pretty good pitch and had some patron discussion with the 4E License Donors. However, I'm keeping the details to myself for now, other than saying it's a kidnap scenario that spirals WILDLY out of control. Design for low to mid-level (3rd or 4th?) is probably the goal, given the novelty of the rules set. Length is currently set at about 30,000 words, but... I'm liking the concept well enough to expand it significantly. It is not a limited edition.

If all that hedging doesn't scare you off, you can donate to the Wrath of the River King project as the spirit moves you. Donations of $30 or more gain full access to the discussion of this project. Donations of $100 or more gain access to a playtest game I will run at GenCon plus a print copy of the adventure, signed by me.

The success or failure of "Wrath" is unrelated to the current Open Design. Whether it is ever fully funded, it will not displace the current 3E project. If the terms of the GSL makes this project impossible, your money will be refunded in full.

Hey, someone told me that they had trouble signing up for "Wrath", because PayPal refused to accept payments in dollars (?). Most people haven't had this issue, but if you run into something similar, let me know.

Also, some extra tidbits about "Wrath". It was originally called "The Miller's Stolen Bride", which tells you a little about the style. It has evolved into a fey vs mortals story of changelings, imminent destruction, and a journey into the Feywild. Unlike most faerie tales, there are no elves, only green hags, crouching ogres, quicklings, and river goblins.

Well, and the lorelei. And miller's treachery. Bargains with the River King never end well...

There is big news on the GSL front (in absence of the actual license). WotC's Mike Lescault answers questions in an interview over at ENWorld. For Open Design, it will be possible to do both 3.5 and 4 as long as they are different product lines.

What it means for KQ, I'm still not sure.

Well, hell. The clarified terms don't help KQ a bit, but if I want to launch another product line I can do 4e and 3E at the same time. Worth considering.

And the license is revokable.

I'll wait until I have a copy, but things are getting a little clearer.

How does the "separate product line" bit work? Does it mean OD can do both 3.5 and 4E material but KQ is limited to one or the other? Reading the interview leaves it still a bit unclear to me, but then I don't have "product lines."

For example, I'm guessing it means Mongoose would be good to continue Conan and do a 4E Freeport build, but once it started up 4E Freeport, there'd be no more 3.5 Freeport. Hrm. I wonder how it works for smaller outfits like OD or Dreamscarred press-- where they don't really have "product lines" but individual projects?

Hrm. hehehehe, well, you could tell he didn't like the term "poison pill."

We still need the actual license (which they seem to constantly tweak as they test the waters on the internet) to know for sure, but this is a bit more encouraging than the last news.

This project also sounds really, really cool. You know, there's too much coolness suggested here. What a problem. Wink Very Happy

I have to admit I don't know how "separate product lines" works; it depends on the language of the license.

At a guess, I think you're fight. KQ has to choose, but OD could have a "Classic Design" line and a "New Design" line. Ok, the labels are dumb, but you get the idea.

It is. It means people like Mongoose don't have to give up on some really great games. I'd been worried about seeing Conan go away...

From the inside, I can tell you... Yes. yes it is...and can you ever have too much cool? Wink

I think not. Very Happy

Yeah, Wrath is pretty cool.

I was worried that it might never see the light of day when the initial news about the GSL came out.

I remain hopeful, because it has a lot of potential. Worst case scenario, we make Wrath a 3.5 project.

I think its patrons would lynch me. It was born as a 4E idea, and attracted a 4E crowd. I'm happy that calling it the first project in a new line may solve the licensing problem.

I am thinking of joining the Wrath crew, not being particularly Edition bound. It would be good to get an early insight on how a trusted Designer works the new system.

Now my understanding that the new license will let you publish in October, but you can do the Open Design work with Patrons up until that date?

Another question....

I understand from the description that this will not be an exclusive product. Check.

I understand from the description that a donation of $30.00 will get me full access to discussion of this project.. Check.

This is going to seem like a totally obvious question, but I just want to make sure... $30.00 will also get me a PDF of the finished product as well as the design discussion? Again, seems incredibly obvious, but I just want to make sure.

From the page:

"If all that hedging doesn't scare you off, you can donate to Wrath of the River King, in any size donation you like. Donations of $30 or more gain full access to the discussion of this project. Donations of $100 or more gain access to a playtest game I will run at GenCon plus a print copy of the adventure, signed by me."

That's always included the PDF in the past, I can't imagine it wouldn't now...but I'm not the man in charge...

Yeah not much help for KQ I guess. I'm leaning more and more towards Wrath because I want to move forward with 4e and doing so with a trusted adventure designer is definitely a plus. The interview on WotC's site (slightly different) states that the license wont be delivered to any publisher till June 6th. So more waiting...

Hi,

I'm really hoping that the GSL news means we can go ahead with this as the first 4e OD project. Fingers crossed!

Cheers
