What makes it great and different is a lot of things, but in particular:

1) Midgard offers a setting built on Germanic, Slavic, and Norse mythology
it supports Pathfinder, AGE System, and 4E D&D
2) Midgard gets frequent support in KQ magazine and supplements
3) Midgard is an inherently unstable setting: things PCs do really do change the world, and it's not meant to be one of those "no matter what level you are, the world is locked in a sitcom time capsule" sort of places
4) The setting uses ley lines, twists on existing PC races, clockwork and shadow magic, a supplementary bestiary of Slavic and Germanic creatures, and much more.

Will it ever support FATE or Legend systems? I don't know. This is the first time anyone has asked for them.

You'll see many more sneak peeks when the setting book is closer to release.

I was trying to explain Midgard to someone the other day and basically I said "It's the Lord of the Rings, with all of Europe's Mythology, and a dash of steampunk." That's the really over-simplified, I need to explain why I'm researching devils to my mother, version.

I like Wolfgang's answer better.

I dunno, I sort of like the short version for those times when someone says "What the heck is it?"

I really, really, really need a slogan that boils Midgard down to a single sentence. Maybe I'll have a patron contest with prizes....

Put simply, "It's a land that draws from the old legends all over Europe. It makes enchanted forests SCARY again." Wink

Thanks to you all Smile

Germanic and norse mythology sounds like it could be my cup of tea! The systems are not that much of a selling point for me but i guess with the voting-system you have in place for deciding which systems to support, we will never see the ones i like best. But ah well, one can not have it all, right? At least not if you're not a fan of the most popular system from the wizards.

The problem with the KQ magazine is i'd have to sign up for that as well...so with a limited budget, that is not the best option Wink Or are these supporting materials also available to patrons without a subscription to the magazine?

Sneak peeks in the "this is how it will look like in published form" would be of interest to me. Sure, the articles on your site are interesting as well, but the presentation and layout is also something i am interested in.
Oh and as a map addict - any chance we'll be able to see the world map as a sell-me-on-midgard goodie? That'd be awesome!

Glad you like the premise! The support for other systems may come along in the future, or it may not. The setting is certainly capable of working with most RPG rule sets.

For the magazine... Well, it's about $16/year, so it's not expensive to subscribe. And it's certainly not required.

I'll definitely have sneak peeks, but the map is undergoing some biggish revisions as the world is developed, so ... Nothing to show there until 2012. I agree it's a great sell-me-on-Midgard goodie, it's an absolutely gorgeous map even in the old version.

Thanks again, Wolfgang.

Well, it'd be awesome to see more systems be adapted or, as another option, if you start with a different one one of these days Wink Sure i can try to hack the setting myself, but the thing is, i'd really like to see what you guys would do with the FATE engine (or any other system you're allowed to use besides the d20 stuff).

Well see, now i am even more curious about the maps...i for one would really like to see how the map evolved. Any chance you could make an article on that on your KQ mainsite? Bonus points for going into what triggered the biggish revisions etc. etc. .
Now, i know you could say "well, see that is why you need to sign up" ... and you're certainly not wrong Very Happy But I am not yet sold on the whole project and atm i don't think i could really profit from the patronage as i have no time to spare Sad (my final exams for university are fast approaching) And if i buy the final product, i will not be able to see what happened to the geography... . So you can see why i still hope for an article and some nice electronical pictures of changing maps to drool over Very Happy

Well, sure, it would be great to have time to tinker with FATE or make a deal to use Cortex or something. But I've got my hands full with Pathfinder and AGE system, and those are paying the bills, so... FATE will have to wait until the core book is released.

The maps might happen sooner, though the changes will be a list of things from name changes to terrain shifts, to new coastlines, new cities, and new islands.

I'm not sure whether that adds up to an article, but I'll ask the cartographer.

Hey, speaking of maps Wolfgang, have you found a use for that city map I sent you by my artist friend?

Gah! I totally lost track of that in the intervening rush on a couple things. I'll dig around for it this weekend a bit, I had an idea it might work with...

Will the Midgard setting work with D&D 4e?

I've been reading this thread trying to find the answer and I see one post from Wolfgang that suggests this setting will support 4e and another that suggests it will only be for PF and AGE.

Can I get an idea of how much of this would be useful to a 4e DM?

Yes. While the Campaign Setting Book will have PF stats for feats, spells. etc., within it, the majority of the book is background text that is useful for any game system. Heck, I often use the setting for Castles & Crusades games. Plus, many of Open Design's earlier companion books are in 4e format, so you have tools there to help flesh out what you don't want to convert yourself. Also note that it looks like the Dark Roads project is adding in 4e.

Hi there I bought a Patron Midgard back in September and I've been so busy I haven't been able to enjoy it and just read it and help. At this point I feel so behind I'm not even sure how to jump back in. Any help or advice would be great. Thanks everyone.

Get the download (you should have received an email about it, though its link may have expired by now--if so, just ping Wolfgang) of what's already been written and read over it. The Dragon Empire, The Steppes, and the Crossroads are being worked on now. The Domain of the Princes will be next. With the manuscript, though, you get to read about all the goodness that's been created to date.

Yep, that's the best option; look at the current brainstorms and offer some ideas there, and read the existing manuscript and critique it. Both excellent ways to help.

Also, another email will go out in December with another specific list of requests like the last couple (maps, feats, review of particular elements).

To the 4E question: I ran Midgard as a 4E campaign for about 18 months (after 3.5, before PF and DA). It certainly works with those rules without a hitch.
