WARNING: thread contains spoilers
Hi,
I'm keen to run this as the next adventure in my campaign - the PCs are the right level, two are dwarves originally from the Ironcrags, but.....
..... the campaign date is currently 6th Iunius (i.e. June)!
Assuming a one month overland journey from Parsantium (my campaign city) to Zobeck, the PCs will still start the adventure in the summer. The scenes in Zobeck can easily take place on a rainy Summer's day, but how do I get the rest of the backstory to work? A freak snowstorm cutting off the Golden Citadel when the skies and passes should be clear?
Any advice gratefully received!
Cheers
Richard

What about changing the snowstorm to a severe thunderstorm that causes flooding and/or mudslides as a means of cutting off the Golden Citadel? _________________ John Ling

Or a hailstorm! A magical hailstorm! (In some thunderstorms you can get hail if the right conditions exist.)
If you want to still use a snowstorm, air or water elementals clashing would work? |

Or possibly the citadel's altitude is higher, such that snow exists from September to May? Plus an unusually cold year?
In fact, the PCs may suspect foul play just based on the weather. _________________ Wolfgang Baur

In some mountains in Colorado (Arapaho Basin - spelling?) snow is commonly present from October through JUNE...
...and Colorado is the same latitude as Virginia.
I imagine that places in Montana/Canada may have snow even later...or even all year round? |

| The Cascades in the Pacific Northwest regularly have snow on them year round...takes a hot summer to melt it completely. |

Thanks everyone! Year round snow seems to be the easiest way of getting round this.
I'm just finishing up the current adventure, then they'll be an overland trip to Zobeck before kicking off Halls. I'll post the session write ups here in case anyone is interested.
Cheers

Right, the PCs are off to Zobeck and from there the Golden Citadel via airship!
I'm running a few encounters en route to Zobeck - a little dungeon from Dungeon Delve, some trolls guarding a bridge and an encounter with the Kariv, but I would like to run one (and only one really) introductory encounter when the PCs arrive in Zobeck before kicking off Halls of the Mountain King. It can be combat, a skill challenge or role-playing.
What, O patrons & Wolfgang, do you suggest? I'd like it to be iconic Zobeck if possible!
Cheers

What level is the party at this point? And what kind of gaming do they like best, heavy combat, roleplay, little mysteries? _________________ Wolfgang Baur

8th level. They like combat but they also enjoy roleplay and mysteries. Since the first encounter in Halls is a combat against the Mammonite cultists, something else might be fun here.

Hi,
The PCs will probably get to Zobeck in the next couple of sessions.
Any ideas for an introductory encounter?
Cheers

| Get them into trouble at the Mountain Star, and get Bombli to pass them a clue about the Halls? Do you have Tales of Zobeck? Lots of encounters in there could be easily adapted. |

Kobolds and gearforged are the iconic bits of Zobeck (IMO), so any encounter featuring either of those would introduce the setting and would also provide some context for later adventures in Halls. If kobolds are a "civilized" race in your setting, though, it's probably less useful to spend time introducing them here.
For particular encounters, the central bit of Madman at the Bridge could be made into a very cool during-combat skill challenge, though if you're running all of Halls it might feel too similar to something there. |

Redcloak Ruckus gives a good reason for getting out of town for a little bit, and it's got kobolds and clockworks, a touch of intrigue, a healthy dose of face smashing. The riot scene's a great time-- I've run it a few times in a convention setting and recommend deciding both on the course and the number of squares to reach the end of the scene.
It's set for 6th level groups, though, and tweaking it up to 8 would be tougher, but juicing it to 7 would be easy--especially if it's the adventure that puts the party at 8.
Let me know if you want any suggestions and I'd be happy to help.
