Well, it was bound to happen someday: Open Design is going to hell.
Yes, it's true, Open Design is opening Dark Roads & Golden Hells, a portal to new demons, killer angels, and the strange landscapes of the planes, from the hells to the shadow plane! Led by Dan Voyce, the designer of the outstanding Northlands sourcebook, this patron project will examine playable sites such as the Vault of Mammon and reusable NPCs suitable for planar journeys, as well as new gear, spells, and hundreds of adventure hooks!
With development by some of the Planescape campaign setting crew and contributions from Paizo's planar designers as well (calling Todd Stewart!), this will be an outstanding book for anyone interested in the planes. As always with Open Design, supporters are invited to brainstorm, pitch, design, and playtest the material as much or as little as they like, resulting in a stronger book (as proven by Open Designs 6 ENnie Awards in 5 years!).
Step out on the Dark Roads and visit some Golden Hells as a patron and designer on the project, and tell us: what would you most like to see in the Open Design planar book? _________________ Wolfgang Baur

Yes, there can never be enough planar source material.
Now if only it does a good job of supporting higher-level campaigns ... :) |

And we're now 85% of the way to funding this project.
Price goes up once we hit the greenlight, so.... Now's the time to put it over the top! _________________ Wolfgang Baur

I would like to see what I think I read in the description: smaller stuff. Not more deities, but more locales, NPC's, Outlandish ideas, and clever stuff that you can't find on material planes.
Bonus: Monsters that aren't just there to be killed. |

Yes, the votes have been cast, and Pathfinder is the primary system.
Some 4e D&D material will be included in an appendix or a separate PDF, depending. It's really not a crunch book at heart, so I think the decision to do both is a good one.
EDIT TO ADD: And the commission is at about 94% or so, which means we're likely to hit the goal this week or next. Price goes up once it is launched, of course. _________________ Wolfgang Baur

Is there still time to get in on the possibility of freelancing on it?
I'm signing up as a patron shortly, but I'm debating between Senior and Standard patron. Honestly, the possibility (and I know it's just a possibility) of being able to flex my writing muscles again would tip the balance. I just didn't know if that typically got settled in the pre-discussion or after project launch.
Thanks! |

Every patron gets to contribute. Senior Patrons get first crack at early pitches, like leaders, locales, etc. Either way, if Wolfgang and the editorial development staff like what you are posting and pitching, there is always the possibility of some freelancing being handed out, if not on the current project, maybe a future one. That is how Brandon Hodges got hired as a developer and I ended up doing the Midgard Player's Guides. Others are working on Bestiarys. So sign up, post your best ideas (even some of the ones you think are so-so, they may have undiscovered genius hidden in them for other patrons to discover) and see what happens...I guarantee maximum munchkin fun no matter what!

Ken, I think Mongo answered wrt the Midgard project---for Dark Roads, the freelance pithes have not started yet, so there's absolutely time to pitch material as a senior patron.
The brainstorming, otoh, is ripping along at tremendous speed, ideas good bad and indifferent.
I do look forward to the pitching and design rounds on this one, I expect some faiRly wild ideas to rise to the top! _________________ Wolfgang Baur
