I don't post this to stir the pot, because I don't think Wolfgang will mind in the slightest...
...but Rite Publishing has jumped on the bandwagon... with a patronage project of their own...
View it here, scroll down a bit
Interesting.. |

Interesting indeed...
The subject matter doesn't interest me so I will not be participating (besides, these days money is tight and I'm saving for a possible upcoming OD project!).
I will say that I do think their "subscribe" option is an innovative application of monthly billing to the patronage concept. Dangerous, but interesting. |

I am of the same mind. I've heard good things about Arcana Evolved, but I have zero investment in it.. and the Asian theme is never been something that grabbed me except maybe when it was part of a larger and diverse campaign setting (like the lands of the Tain people in Pathfinder's Golarion setting).
The installment payment plan is interesting and possibly tricky. I'd be curious how it works out for them.

That's right! I keep meaning to post about this, but I haven't had time for it yet. Their project is big and ambitious, and I think Arcana Evolved fans will love it. _________________ Wolfgang Baur

Yes, I went to the Open Design seminar this year at gencon and I thought the idea was really neat, I thought to myself let’s do a 10,000 word book and let the AE fans choose what we are doing, I would write Bill Collins was on board to edit (I believe he has an editor credit or something around here).
Then at a game I hosted Frank Carr, the author of the fan-favorite project Lands of the Jade Oath, talked to me about publishing the game, (before this it was with the great guys of Throwing Dice Games, who graciously released it to me). This is a unique opportunity for Rite Publishing; I am glad I took the chance and have never looked back.

I cannot take credit for that idea that belongs to Bill Collins, inspired by Monte Cook's payment plan for Ptolus. The very first day I had a fan ask us for a payment plan on the senior patronage.
The risk for me is minimal, I get the first payment at the time the patron signs up. I have yet to have a subscription patron miss a payment, and the numbers that have used this option have been small, the vast majority is straightforward senior patrons.

Yeah it is daunting some days, I don't think I would have gotten so far if Bill Collins was not on board as editor, if I have a question about how patronage is going to affect X and Y, he is right there with the answer.
I would like to say here that Wolfgang and I have exchanged an email or two about this project, and I really appreciate his interest. One of the things from the outset was that when the project met its production goal Rite Publishing would offer Wolfgang Baur a free senior patronage. Without you and your seminar this project would not exist.
The fans are ecstatic, there were questions about the pricing but as people came to look at the comparative costs along with the features and benefits of patronage they began to see the value of that cost. Lands of the Jade Oath is a fan thread started on Monte’s boards that has gone on for several years and the following it has generated is what has made this project possible.

Ed as always thanks for your support.
For those of you who are not fans of Oriental Arcana be on the lookout for our next patronage project!
Me, I am buying a senior patronage to Wolfgang's next project so I can see how he does it from the ground up.
For those of you who want to follow the project and its status go HERE

I'm just looking forward to being on the audience side of this one. I'm intensely curious how much patron involvement there will be, and how Jade Oath will handle some of the standard Oriental Adventure design issues (culture and monsters, mostly). _________________ Wolfgang Baur

As am I. I greatly look forward to Jade Oath.
And not just because JADE is in the name.
...though it don't hurt none. |

I would like to announce here that we made our threshold today (production goal), and our patron forums will open up on OCT 23rd if not before.
I called both Frank and Bill on the phone last night to let them know, we could not express how thrilled we are.

Is this a quesiton of how much involvement is allowed or how active our patrons will be?
To the former: I like to look at Pathfinder alpha and beta as an example, then the adventure is wide open (save we have to get the licence approved by Monte Cook for the adventure, as he would not write us a blank check, we will give him the patrons three best ideas in order of popularity.)
To the latter: alot of our patrons are a very dedicated group of fans for Monte Cook's Arcana Evolved, and more senior patrons than standard patrons so I expect it to be very active involvment and am glad its not my ideas being torn to shreds _________________ Steve "Quillion" Russell

Man, so many games, so little time!
I might support "A Witch's Choice" - looks very interesting.
Hey Qwilion - is patronage still open for this project?
Thanks for the link, fellers!

Yes, we have not yet met our threshold goal (YET!)
We currently have 24 patrons (senior patrons count as two patrons), we need 40 patrons to meet our threshold (We need 16 more). The project has only been open for 2 weeks and 3 days, and our deadline to reach our threshold will be Dec 24th.
I have released my first draft to the Senior Patron, bit I am awaiting threshold before we open up our forums and go any farther with it.
Thanks for your intrest. _________________ Steve "Quillion" Russell
